No advice is good advice!

Best advice I've heard in a while:

Quote:
Pat & Ali: My one piece of advice for all cruisers is this: "Stop taking advice, and stop giving advice." Sounds kind of rude when I type it out, but seriously, cruisers take this stuff way too seriously. Stop worrying, go out and cruise however you see fit, and everything will work out just fine in the end. You won't sink your boat, you won't end up on a life raft in the middle of the Pacific for 50 days, you won't... None of the stuff you are worrying about before setting out is going to matter in the long run, so just go out and have fun.

Deinitely good however somewhat simplistic if taken in context by itself.

I'll go with Doodles.... remember its a sport amongst 'sailors' baiting others... round the docks its often... 'Tsk tsk... I wouldnt do that..' or 'Tsk tsk... your not setting out like that are you.. no radar.. no life raft.... sheesh'
Doom mongers abound...

Yes, it's great to be ignorant and learn by your mistakes. Please don't be a hypocrite and pass on your life's lessons.

Re: No advice is good advice!

Everything in moderation.
- don't offer advice if it isn't asked for
- don't give advice like you are God, or the Master of the Universe
- don't get bent out of shape if the recipient does not take your advice
- do be open to good advice when you hear it
- do be willing to share your experience, good and bad

and finally: "Take my advice .............. I'm not using it!"

Re: No advice is good advice!

Some of the questions posed on the CF are obviously from sailors who are either inexperienced, curious or downright confused. Because I've been around boats for over 6 decades, the suggestions/advice I offer is based on having been there and done it. Still make mistakes and anxious to learn from others so don't have all the answers but think it is of some value to allow others to pick my brain (or what's left of it) to make their journey in to boating somewhat easier. Nitpik hit the nail on the head... the only thing I would add is that any advise I give is worth exactly what you paid for it. And boatman61, you give me my laughs for the day... Thx Capt Phil

Re: No advice is good advice!

I figure no advice is like no advice, and bad advice can be dismissed. Good advice is precious and should be treasured like the gift it is.

True, but I wonder what the ratio of "didn't make it" to "didn't leave" is?

Well said.

Oh, and, "you won't sink your boat"? Actually, quite a few people DO sink their boats every year. Often after having ignored plenty of that precious good advice.

I don't know, but I suspect that the ones who have the wherewithal to "make it" don't really need to be told to leave. They will take the good advice that is offered, they will ignore the bad advice that too often gets thrown about, and they will go when they are ready.

I really doubt that there are many (if any) successful, long-term cruisers who wouldn't have gone on their own. That is, who wouldn't be out there is someone had not told them to "just go!"
