New zodiac cadet dinghy / how to operate self bailer?

I'm ready to pop this dang thing. None of the manuals show hot to operate thus awful device. Personally I prefer a drain plug. Pop it in and it stops water from coming in. A fairly important guideline to adhere to. I've tried every dang way to get this thing from leaking water in. Anyone have one of these? From back of dinghy is a piece that screws in seemingly tight. Inside is a lever that can be moved side to side. Starboard is a black circle. Port is a black outline of a circle. I'd have guessed one side is closed and one is open???? Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason!

I don't know the boat, however I would guess that the solid circle means closed, and the empty circle means open.

If it's installed and working properly : Set it to port/right as you look at it/empty circle/open when underway and it sucks any bilge water out. Close it before coming to a stop.

If it leaks when closed, buy and fit a replacement, they are pretty cheap on E-Bay:

But not if you buy them from Defender:

StuM that's the plan. Back to states this week and will get a new one. Nothing easy to find in Bahamas. Pretty annoying nothing at all in manual.
