Spend the 1000.00 in airfare to get to Panama, buy a 14K to 29K boat and do the easy route if you're really serious. Colon all the better, maybe someone chickened out. (set aside 1-2K to transit the canal).

Up on the Rio Dulce in Guatamala you'll find a bunch of boats left behind by others who quit. May be an option as well.
