Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

Dear All,
In preparing for some trips with new crew, I need to produce diagrams and other documentation showing the locations of safety items, etc.
Does anyone have a neat outline of the waterline of a sailing boat in some format that can be imported into some free presentation software (OpenOffice, Apple Keynote...)?
(I have tried tracing outlines from my plans, etc, but I am ham-fisted and all my various attempts embarrass me.)
Help!

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

Thank you for reminding me I need to do similar!

The method is fortunately quite easy; here's how I'd do it in Keynote:

1. From the Shape toolbar, select the Bezier Curve.
2. Place one end of the curve where you want the bow to be, the other end at the edge of the stern.
3. Drag the midpoint of the curve until you have the desired curvature.
4. Right-click and duplicate the curve, then from the "Arrange" menu select "Flip Horizontally" (assuming the fore-aft centerline is vertical) and drag it to mirror the first half.
5. From the Shape toolbar, use the straight line tool to add the transom, bulkheads, etc (hold shift so it jumps to perfectly vertical or horizontal).
6. Once everything is as you like it, select everything and from the right-click menu choose the "group" and "lock" options.

Great, Requiem, thank you very much (I shall post back on here if I make something I am pleased with)!

Why not just use something like this:

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

Hey SeanPatrick,
Lovely drawings!! Sadly (for this purpose!), my boat is a 52’ version with a somewhat different layout and I need several different horizontal slices to show eg the sea-cocks below the waterline; flares, first-aid and fire-fighting stuff and grab bags in the saloon; and a third level for deck-level safety gear (danbuoys, EPIRB, liferaft). It all gets a bit complicated pretty quickly!
PS - where did you get those drawings from? (they are far clearer than those I have obtained for my boat).
Thanks and best wishes,
Keith

Great idea!! I plan to use Microsoft Visio, Paint OR Excel drawing programs. Do an internet on "sailboat safety gear locations" and you will find examples like these:

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

Nice examples! But what I need is to build up my own, so my request was for help in drawing my own (I need three different pages and want to make them consistent, and better looking than I would acheive with scissors and using some obliterating stuff.).
Requiem has got me on my way!
(Altho I did not know what a Bezier curve is and that took some time to work out!; and I do not have a desktop Mac and my little Mac Air something mini-laptop seems not to have the same options or at least the same toolbars and buttons as are found on the full sized machines.)

I have been working on something like this for our boat, and have not been happy with the results. The links posted are much better, thank you to all for this post!

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

I have a reasonable shape for my hull outline now - thanks to Requiem. I tried to post the file here for others to copy and modify as they wish, but the Forum doesn’t accept Mac files with .key extensions.
Good luck to all working on these docs!

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

I used the boat diagram from the Owners Manual.
Here is a copy of my safety equipment diagram for Beneteau 50. The icons could be moved around on any boat outline as a background.
I plan to make a separate diagram for seacocks, fuel shut off etc., as there is just a bit too much going on for 1 diagram.

Wow, that’s great! It’s beyond what I expected I cd reach, so it sets the standard and I will see what I can do to get close. Thank you very much and congratulations!

Thanks and best wishes,

I googled "Moody Carbineer 52 plans". Couldn't find those exact plans within a couple seconds, so I picked the above as an example.

Do you have a scanner? If not, I wonder if a place like OfficeMax could scan the plans for you. At any rate, I'm pretty handy with making diagrams. Here's an example I made for a friend:

If you can send me a sketch or a photo of exactly what you'd like, I can try to help. No promises, though. I've been super busy and I have about four or five other projects I need to finish.

Cheers!

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

Sorry for jumping ahead a bit, Keith, but what's your intention for these drawings? Are you going to put them into some crew briefing booklet? How do you think such a booklet would be used?

Just for a bit of comparison, the Ministry of Transport requires that before setting off (on an RYA instructional course, for example) the captain must conduct a safety briefing which includes:

Operation of the VHF and how to send a Mayday, with brief description of what would constitute a Mayday and steps that will be taken in such an emergency
Starting and operation of the engine
Location of the lifejackets
Location and operation of the fire extinguishers and/or fire blanket
Location of the first aid kit
Seacocks and their use
Operation of the head
Moving about the cabin and on deck

Also, one of the first practices done once underway is a MOB drill.

I may be omitting some items, but you get the idea. Why a diagram?

Oh yeah, and:

Location of the grab bag
(usually under the nav station)
Deployment and operation of the liferaft

Re: Neat diagrams of locations of safety gear?

SeanPatrick and Moana Bella offer a really good solution............use the Snip & Sketch to copy and paste your boat's plan and cross-sectional views from the owner's manual into a WORD document. Then use the Shape function in WORD to insert arrows from a text description of the safety gear to their location.
