Navigating from Shelter Island to Norwalk, CT

Hello All,

I will be picking up my boat sometime in the next month from Shelter Island and bringing it to my slip in Norwalk. The boat is a 20ft Hydra-sport dual console with a Yamaha 150 outboard.

My question is, how concerned should I be passing through Plum Island channel and what is the best time to pass through? Ideally, id like to pass through in the morning so I have plenty of time to make it to Norwalk. Any other challenges I should expect?

Thanks for your advice!

That is an easy route if you watch the charts.......wait for a calm day and ride the current all the way....it will save a lot time. If the winds are out of the east the waves will be up

With the power and speed of that boat Plum Gut won't be much of a concern. If you pick a day with calm or moderate winds even on ebb or flood the waves won't be bad and even if it's a bit bumpy it's only for short stretch so even if you have to slow down will be quickly passed.

Morning usually the best time as the winds tend to build from the SW in the afternoons. If the winds are SW and it looks like it could get bumpy, for a more comfortable ride you might want to hug the LI side of the sound and cut across to Norwalk when you get closer.
