What does #79 mean? Brand of sail? Thanks.

Often it can be the hull number of the boat, but it could be most anything.

I would say it's the hull number of the Freedom 32 but I've seen one with a sail number up in the hundreds and they only made 90, so scratch that idea.

Thanks. Actually I think the # should be 97, I'm looking at it backwards! haha
That's the other thing, all research shows my id hull # should be on the transom. It's not. I can't find it anywhere on the boat! Is there a source for this? Thanks.

There's often a maker's patch somewhere near the tack.

The HIN is on the transom, however only after some year when it was required.
I don’t know what that year was though, just me, but I wouldn’t worry about who made the sail, I’d worry about construction and condition, but then I’m no real sailor anyway.

Looks like the sail number 79 is correct.....I can also read the "Freedom" logo on the hull and the name on the transom....so 79 is the correct number, and as said by others it is usually the hull number.

From the sailmakers logo on the sail, it looks like the sail was built by one of the
Banks Sail lofts.

Hull ID numbers are normally located on the upper starboard corner of the transom, and consist of the OEM identification code, the hull number, the month and year of manufacturer.

It should be the hull number. I have a main with a different number on it even though it was built for my model boat, and has the correct insignia, because it was built for a different boat and I got it used. My hull number is stamped in the bronze rudder post plate in the cockpit sole, but I have also seen it written on the backs of cabinet panels (from when they were building the boat.)

HIN were required from sometime in the fall of 1972 as I recall.
Sail number can be:
Hull number of a series of boats
Assigned by the National Authority (US Sailing in the USA ) typically 5 digits. As low as one or two digits.
Assigned by the appropriate one design class association
Some number the owner liked
Assigned by the local racing handicap association.
The number on a used sail that was purchased for the boat.

I’ve had sail numbers in 5 of these 6 categories. on various boats.

Probably more categories that I missed. [emoji1]

Thanks so much. I believe you are correct in saying it's a Banks, though it is not on the sail itself.
I've had my boat for two yrs now and have searched for two years for the ID.
