My cost of purchasing a boat

I see a few people that post their cruising expenses and know this is very helpful for context so others can plan. I haven't noticed much in the way of actual numbers for purchasing a boat so I thought I would post mine.

The numbers below include all expenses involved for me to purchase my boat in Florida and move it approximately 480 miles to inland Georgia. I did all of the prep work/derigging of the boat myself. I also did all of the rerigging in Georgia. This only includes lifting the mast from the boat and securing/wrapping for transport (I was not present for this portion) and lifting the mast for reinstallation. It also does not include any travel expenses for the many 16 hour round trip drives that were required.

Nothing was beyond what I expected and planned for but at the same time don't underestimate the amount of work and expenses of the process. I did get a quote from the company that did the rigging inspection to de commission the boat and it was about $8k. Although a lot of money it was a lot of work and probably not too off base.

For those looking to purchase a boat don't forget to plan of the expenses involved in taking ownership. Depending on your situation they can definitely add up.

Re: My cost of purchasing a boat

With regards to the registration, how long is the registration good for? I ask because there can be differences between states. For example, here in New York the registration is for 3 years but in New Jersey it is for one year.

For those interested, per the NYS DMV:
  • Initial and renewal vessel registration (calculated by the length of your boat):
    • Less than 16 feet: $26.25.
    • 16 ft to 26 ft: $57.50.
    • 26 ft or longer: $93.75.
  • Boat title: $50.
  • Lien fee: $5 per lien.
  • Replacement fees:
    • Registration (card or sticker): $2.
    • Title: $20.
  • NY sales tax: 8.875% of the vessel's sale price.
For those who are interested, per the NU Motor Vehicles Department:
Boat length (pleasure)
Fee
Less than 16 feet
$12.00
16 Feet but less than 26 feet
$28.00
26 feet but less than 40 feet
$52.00
40 feet but less than 65 feet
$80.00
65 feet or more
$250.00

Re: My cost of purchasing a boat

for a documented boat USCG abstract of title is $25 and transfer of documentation is $84... there are no 'closing' costs. Now I registered in a state that has no title and no tax (RI) if you are documented, so maybe CA is different.

$550 for insurance is pretty low on a $70k boat... or is this just liability? I'm paying about $700/yr for $40k agreed value from progressive.

His account says Sabre 42 from GA...? Now I'm more confused. Is he sailing/keeping the boat in CA, but living in GA? You pay sales tax where it is kept and registered. I can't imagine he moved it coast to coast for $4,125.

Edit.. sorry he didn't say anything about being in or buying from CA.

Re: My cost of purchasing a boat

Great post, you dont see this stuff much. Man there are some high prices there from what I would expect but my data is old.
I guess maybe you had some work done rather than doing it yourself? like: "mast removal prep for transporation"

Re: My cost of purchasing a boat

ArmyDaveNY-Vessel registrations extend for a period of three calendar years and expire the last day of the vessel owner's month of birth in the last year of registration.

zstine-I did not renew/transfer the USCG documented status. Was of no advantage as the boat was moved to inland waters. The insurance is also lower because of the boat being in protected inland waters. I have liability w/ $100k agreed value.

Thanks

I'm curious, where do you sail a 42' vessel in GA?

I ask because my experience sailing in 22-37' vessels in Lanier was, ah, less than stellar
