When we were considering which route to take across the Indian Ocean - Red Sea or South Africa during the height of the piracy problem - there was an international naval flotilla in the NW Indian Ocean. I think there were a dozen plus small warships, frigates and the like, including Canadian (we were Canadian-flagged). The forces' website had a page for pleasure craft that stated quite explicitly that they could not, and would not, intervene if a yacht was taken. The zone they were talking about was west from the longitude of the southern tip of India and north from latitude of the northern tip of Madagascar. We went to South Africa and took our ensign down after leaving Mauritius and put it up when we entered South African waters. With the strong winds we had 30 to 45 knots it made no sense to destroy an expensive flag that no one would see other than us.

This was our one exception about flying the ensign when no one was around. From Cape York to Darwin, and from Bali towards Christmas Island, we had daily overflights (and radio calls).

Or an actual alien alien.

Actually, viewing the ensign provides for an easy way to determine the apparent wind.
And they can look grand. See images below of ships properly and smartly wearing an ensign. Best when wearing by flying but spread across the deck held by the crew is a distinct novelty, if the ensign is too large to be flown.
Rather the same point as to displaying day signals [e.g., black cone point end down when motor sailing], and displaying black spheres when at anchor, or transmitting with AIS. One never knows when someone will come near.
Kind of like wearing clothing when no one else is around, can be a bit awkward to be caught improperly dressed or not dressed.
Never know when a helicopter will arrive just a short distance off your stern.
There be no need to be shy about which nationality the vessel has, large ensigns show well from afar.

In the alternative, I suppose one could break normal flag etiquette and wear their flag this way. Pretty certain what the flag state is likely to be.

Absolutely false.
The captain can be of any nationality. And can change from voyage to voyage.
The "flag of registry" of the vessel doesn't change.

Still celebrated each year with a dinner for senior naval officers on HMS Victory. Other Officer's Messes also having a jolly good shindig on the nearest Saturday evening. Well spotted, should have read Senior Ranks, old habits and names die hard.
Should we consider the Royal Marines though?

Actually, I even find the concept of "Warrant Officers" strange- they were only re-introduced well after my father (CPO) retired and we left the UK.

Formal Clearance and Entry for State Registered, Foreign Owned Vessels
A somewhat unique situation occurs when a vessel is registered in a State of the United States [e.g., the state of Florida] but not owned by a US citizen or Permanent Resident. These vessels are NOT considered by CBP to be US flagged, and they take on the nationality of the owner. So a Florida registered boat owned by a Canadian citizen would be considered to be an undocumented Canadian vessel with a Florida registry. Unfortunately, these vessels are required to physically clear in and out with Customs every time they make a jurisdictional change using Form 1300. Failure to do so can result in fines of up to $5000 per infraction

As a delivery captain I fly the flag of registry for the vessel. If she is not us flagged, the Stars and Stripes are flow off the spreader.
Dang proud to be a (reg IND) American. Also want those boys from Seal Team 6 to come for me if things go fully sideways.
