Multiple boat capsize off Mobile

Coast Guard responds to reports of multiple missing persons and capsized vessels near Mobile Bay | Coast Guard News

Reports just coming in say multiple boats capsized and at least one dead.

I could have been out in those waters today, but work kept me home.

Fair winds,

Leo

Look at the sudden severe gust! Perhaps they never saw it coming.

Re: Multiple boat capsize off Mobile

A lot of boats heading that way yesterday for the anual Dauphin Island race. Several of those with friends of mine on board.

Had 70mph winds come through where I am anchored 15 miles east just a couple of hours ago. I was afraid I would hear bad news from the Bay after that.

Early reports say several sailors missing.

One confirmed death as already mentioned.

News teams in route.

Re: Multiple boat capsize off Mobile

My guess, yes it is accurate.

Only lasted a few minutes when it came through the bayou here. I'm tucked in next to shore with little fetch at all. My boat sailed to port and healed over 10+ degrees and stayed there.

A friend texted to check on me and stated there were 80mph gusts off shore south of me and 70 mph gusts on land north of me.

Local news at 5:30 showed trees down around Mobile area.

Re: Multiple boat capsize off Mobile

I rode out a microburst offshore on a 750' ship some years ago. 85 mph on the beam made an impression on a big boat. Make a sailor a mite paranoid.

I hope for the best for those missing.

A friend texted five people missing.

I get the "not accepting calls message" when I ring up a friend who left yesterday to race solo just for fun there today.

One missing sailor found. Four still missing.

A 50,000 foot tall storm rolled through the area at 3:20 today.

Yes, the chart is accurate. We were/are in a slip at Pirates Cove, Elberta, Al. when it rolled through, was outside securing things. We must be 15 miles east of Mobile Bay. Came on so fast and so hard.

Just spoke to the crew on an Irwin 43' in next slip just returned, they were in the race and were knocked down by the initial gust while carrying only a reefed main as they only had time to roll up the headsail. Under full power they were being blown back.

Re: Multiple boat capsize off Mobile

Got a text. My friend just limped back in to the marina at Orange Beach. Sails were shredded and a hole in the boat from rigging failure. I assume possible a chain plate pulled out a hunk of boat but not sure.

Said he was lucky to be alive and the ports were under water. Sounds like he got knocked down and stayed down. I know at anchor my boat healed over and stayed there for longer than I have ever experienced.

boat can be fixed, sails replaced/repaired.
Maybe shaken but at least he and his boat made it.

Re: Multiple boat capsize off Mobile

Was leaving an event on Pensacola Beach when I saw this coming from the west and though I better check on the boat at marina on Pensacola Bay. Glad I did, broke the port-stern dock line and waves crashing over the dock. It was brutal and felt like a tropical storm. Tore up the docks.

Prayers for those lost and hope for those still not accounted for.
