Motown - Caribbean docking/ anchoring

Hi guys,
I'm going to sail my 42' Peterson from Detroit to the Caribbean in Aug/Sep. I searched the web for relevant information about cheap and/or free docks along the US east coast. Here is what I found so far with some additional remark about Cape Hatteras. I'm yet single handed so sailing the Cape is out of question not just because of my inexperience. I'd appreciate any additions. Also for the ICW. I'm not sure but I read somewhere that there are long distances without any refuel opportunities?
Appreciate any support or hints about a more precise and complete listing.

ICW / Eastern Seaboard
---------------------------------
New York, Statue of Liberty (west of it)
Atlantic City, NJ, Casinos
Cape May, NJ
Rudee Inlet, VA
Cape Lookout, NC

---------------------------------------
Cape Hatteras is dangerous!
Probably only with trysail and staysail.
If the boat draws 10 feet or less and has a masthead height of under 65 feet
(the standard vertical clearance under fixed bridges on the ICW), this is
definitely the safest way to go.
---------------------------------------

Chesapeake (great bridge), VA, south-east of lock, docks on either side of
bridge, walking to grocery/hardware/restaurants

Oriental, NC, 48 hour municipal dock, towndock.net for webcam
Beaufort, SC, nice floating dock next to marina and anchorage, free all day usage
Myrtle Beach, SC, barefoot landing at seaside, stay for 4 hours for $5
Darian, GA. 8 miles off ICW, electricity & water. 2 nights allowed
St Marys, GA, room for a 60’ boat, water, possible overnights

Florida East Coast
------------------
Jim King Park, FL, free floating dock by Sister Creek Bridge on ICW
New Smyrna, FL, sign says no overnight but it's okay
Cocoa, FL, sign says no overnight but it's okay

Re: Motown - Caribbean docking/ anchoring

Are you referring to docks only or are you considering anchoring or moorings?

I ask because you mention west of the Statue of Liberty. There is no docking for private vessels allowed but it is a fabulous place to anchor.

Regarding fuel on the ICW, there are stretches without fuel but with just a modicum of planning should not be a problem at all. Never actually measured but from four trips up the east coast I seem to recall no more than 20-30 miles or as the longest gap between fuel docks. Even if the gap is 50-60 miles surely your Peterson has a range of a few hundred miles so quite easy to plan fuel stops.

Hatteras? Well it can be dangerous but so can most other parts of the ocean. The risk of Hatteras is due to shoals extending a way offshore and the Gulf Stream passing close to the cape. This makes it really nasty when there's a brisk wind blowing against the current IE winds from NE-N-NW. If the winds are very light from any direction or moderate from a southerly direction then Hatteras will be no worse than any other stretch of the coast.

Assume you already learned from previous posts that you will have a couple of long stretches offshore when heading south from NY.

Re: Motown - Caribbean docking/ anchoring

Nice, like it!

Yes of course, I searched the web already and yes, mooring or anchoring is okay too.
But as I have no dinghy or canoe yet I'm probably dependent on docking once in a while to buy food and have internet access, do phone-calls and such things.

That the ICW is well equipped with fuel stations is a relieve.
Means that I do not need to buy additional canister with fuel or probably just a small one just to be sure. In the end it's not a Pacific Ocean passage.
The only burden there now remaining are the muddy and shallow parts of the canal.
My girl 'Heidemarie' draws almost 7ft!

But what about the East Coast itself?
Do you know more places where I can anchor, moor or dock (and additionally on a low-cost or free basis) along the coast then the one's I mentioned?

Taking a turn offshore alone (single handed) is no option by the way not just because I have no autopilot (yet).
In another post I'm still searching for a guy or girl to join me, then it be okay but for now I'm on my own. It's more than 200 miles from Norfolk to the next save harbor south of Cape Hatteras...
