I found this quite interesting. Looks like some of the old full keel boats really do have a more user freindly motion then their more expensive counterparts.

Motion Comfort Ratio was developed by Boat Designer Ted Brewer. The formula predicts the speed of the upward and downward motion of the boat as it encounters waves and swells. The faster the motion the more uncomfortable the passengers. Thus, the formula predicts the overall comfort of a boat when it is underway. Higher values denote a more comfortable ride. As the Displacement increases the motion comfort ratio will increase. As the length and beam increases the motion comfort ratio will decrease.

I'm currently looking at a Wauqueiz Gladiateur 33, and was surprised that it's Motion Comfort Ratio was lower than my current boat which is a Bristol 27.

I have heard the Gladiateur has a very good motion.

Not to mention that when passage making, motion comfort is an accumulative inverse equation. Six days spent on a "comfortable" boat can be worse than three days on an "uncomfortable" one.

And point of sail makes a large difference. Turn some of those "comfortable" boats downwind in a sea and they become upchuck wagons as they roll, yawl and heave.

Yep, the downwind sailing on my full keeled Bristol does take some getting used to. When I first bought it and was sailing down the bay under a NE wind of around 24 knots, she was rolling back and forth, back and forth, back and forth..........did I say she was rolling back and forth, yep, back and forth. (plus yawing and pitching mixed in) I felt like screaming will you stop! We're talking mouth of the Chesapeake where the swells from the Atlantic Ocean mix with the closeup steep waves of the bay.

Coming from the catamaran world, I wasn't used to this. (but I hadn't been in this large of seas with my catamarans either) My reaction was not so much an upchuck scenario which seems kinda limited, it was more of a blow chunks scenario or power puking! Good thing I had autopilot because it and the boat had to bring me across alone with very little help from me.

Anyway, on Saturday I had a similar situation coming back under a NW wind of about 22 knots, but now it seemed like old hat even when I had to go forward and unjam my crappy roller furler while the bow buried into each wave. Fun stuff. Look Mom, no chunks!

So then, why are boats like the Gladiateur rated below the Bristol in comfort? For my next boat, I want more speed, more length, more weight, and more efficiency but I don't want a catamaran far out to sea because I've either flipped or pitchpoled them to many times in fast mode.........

This is really a pretty useless index in my view. I have had boats with various indexes. The one with the best index was the most uncomfortable offshore. Even Brewer stated

COMFORT RATIO (CR): This is a ratio that I dreamed up, tongue-in-cheek, as a measure of motion comfort but it has been widely accepted and, indeed, does provide a reasonable comparison between yachts of similar type.

Comparing a light weight boat, a medium weight boat and a heavy weight boat means you are not comparing yachts of similar type. So the comparison really doesn't mean much of anything.

Ok because I have heard nothing but good things about the Wauqueiz Gladiateur 33 in the motion department and here this index has my Bristol rated higher. After Saturday, I'm thinking a little more waterline, a bit more weight, and more beam has to be better than riding the Bucking Bronco.

Plus a bit more pointing ability and speed would be welcomed also.

Keep in mind that the "number" is only an opinion - not an actual physical property like righting moment, etc. If you look at the formula, you see that it favors heavy displacement, narrow beam, etc. So it by nature favors those types of boats.

Our old Columbia 40 (high comfort number) was a very comfortable boat going upwind in short chop. I often wish to be back on it when we are in the same conditions with our catamaran. It is really, truly, unbelievably annoying on the cat. Not sickening - more like some one is really under your skin and won't go away. Enough so that we will often change our destination just to make it go away.

Turned around, however, and our catamaran is like a train on tracks going downwind in large, heaving seas. If it wasn't for the sound of the water, you hardly know you are sailing. Those conditions are blow-chunk central on the Columbia. It would be lifting by the stern as a wave came, rolling to one side, running down the wave while rounding up, sinking in the trough while rolling to the other side and falling off, heaving upwards while the next wave comes from behind - and over and over and over - I'm getting ill just explaining it.

If I were to get a mono, I would look for as much waterline length as possible, a fin keel and moderate underbody, good beam but not carried all the way back and squared off, and on the lighter side of displacement rather than heavier.

I guess I am describing a low "comfort" boat, but I think speed, maneuverability and space contribute more to comfort than Brewer thinks.

No, I'm not kidding. And no I haven't flipped a cruising cat, but it stays in your head after years of flipping, pitchpoling, carbon mast busting, new sail stretching/ruining............

Then you read the stories about guys like Steve Fossett living in a flipped catamaran............doesn't matter anyway. I'd worry about finding a parking place if I had a large cruising cat.

You must have had it bad. I have a friend who medaled in the olympic tornados, was in the recent AC45 worlds and the Extreme 40 circuit and now races a MOD70 tri. I watched him flipped his boat in the AC45 series and suspect he has flipped and pitchpoled multihulls many times in his racing career. He just bought his second cruising cat and doesn't feel any qualms at all.

Cruising cats are completely different beasts. Loaded as we are for cruising, I don't think it is possible for us to flip, short of a monster 30'+ breaking wave on the beam. Definitely our rigging will give way before the wind flips us and we don't surf fast enough to get in pitchpole danger. Besides, in those conditions, we would take precautions like drogues, etc.

We aren't racing anywhere...

Whose sense of motion? Whose comfort? Statistics like these are really absurd in the real world as all boats have their own unique sailing characteristics and are greatly dependent on the sailor at the helm and how the boat is trimmed based upon conditions. Do you like the banging uphill slog or the ponderous, rolling downhill run in a heavy displacement vessel with a high comfort ratio or prefer the journey in a lighter racer/cruiser with an efficient underbody with a quicker motion and a lower ratio? These numbers, as Brewer stated, can only be "tongue in cheek" and can only be quoted by a bearded seasoned Dock Admiral, who never leaves the marina, to a complete neophyte who after he masters sailing, two to three years max, will sell the boat and build a log cabin in the mountains and prepare for the Armageddon. Motion Comfort Ratio . . . anyone seen a Sasquatch lately?

Even though our trawler the Eagle is not a sail boat I have calculated the Motion Comfort Ratio and other ratios using this sight. http://www.sailingcourse.com/keelboat/motion_comfort.htm.

The Eagle a long range coastal full dsiplacment trawler, 75,000+ lbs displacment, 58 ft LOA, 51 ft LOW and 14 ft beam , 6 ft draft, which more resembles a sail boat than most power boats.

The Eagle is comfort ratio 58.76 which is high even for a sail boat. However, I really don’t know what that means, excepts its high. .

The ratio I am more concerned about is the stability angle, the max degree the boat can heel and still up right. The Eagle is someplace between 100 to 120 for off shore. The reason is I do not know what the weight of the ballast is, so I had to estimate. If she goes all the way over she will not right herself. I would think 90 degree flat on the water would be good enough?

The stability ratio is 1.2 indicating good stability as its under 2.0 But again I don't really know how it compares?

I don't know how the roll period relates to a sail boat but its commonly used for power boats. A comfortable roll is betwen 5 to 10 seconds. The time it take to make one complete roll, to one side and back again. As near as I can time the Eagle is about 5 to 6 seconds which feels comfortable. To low is snappy, and to high feel like it doing over.

Anyway there are more rations to looked at than just the motion comfort ratio.

No, I didn't have it bad. I was a singlehander with a spinnaker. Think through the downwind mark rounding with 10 - 20 boats rounding at once.

Someone has to get the spinnaker down.

Someone has to drive the boat.

Someone has to readjust the main (and jib which I did run on distance races)

I had a cam cleat for the spin sheet on each hull. Spinlock for the spinnaker halyard. An 8 to 1 cam cleat block for the main, but it always got interesting coming into that downwind mark at sometimes around 20 knots and having to make a 90 to 150 degree turn..........

Actually though, I have always like the traditional sailboat for cruising especially as a singlehander..........

What you describe sounds like going for the only dessert at a beach pot luck where we are! BTW, I have capsized at a few of those...
