Re: Mechanical problem with charter - how to proceed

This has been a good list of reasons I would never buy an ex charter boat. Or a rental car for that matter.

Re: Mechanical problem with charter - how to proceed

I'm hearing the FP cats with the fixed 3-blade props have a history of losing their props (as in multiple times a year in some cases). I'm wondering if it's caused by charterers locking the prop in gear while underway instead of letting it freewheel in neutral.

Like the song goes “just walk away Rene “
This is what their attorney “do we screw em and how” could write you in his demand letter. You admit you continued to use one engine when you clearly knew the other engine had no thrust. Further, you proceeded to put the vessel at risk with a close quarters passage with insufficient power to avoid collisions. Further, you reattached the propeller without permission of the charter vessel owners. The mechanic has been dismissed for his unauthorized comments. The vessel was returned with damage due to improper operation...specifically, shifting too quickly. The transmission repair costs and revenue lost while the vessel was under repair is detailed in attachments.
I’d let sleeping dogs sleep.
Did THEY offer to do the right thing?
There is your answer.
Happy trails to you.

+1 for above.
Chartered with DYC in Grenada. Worst charter ever.
Chartered with Moorings many places, many times. 10 levels of service better.
DYC doesn't give a damn about the customer.
Moorings appreciates the customer.

I did not name the charter company because I wasn’t looking to bad mouth them at this point.

However, I will give it to you guys for figuring out the charter company, the location, AND the actual manufactured of the Cat.

Also agree that Moorings is probably the best company to go to with in future.

Re: Mechanical problem with charter - how to proceed

Aren't boats fun? I ran a bareboat charter company for five years. We had strict maintenance contracts. There were problems every week. I never want to do that again.
Ethical charter company will refund all expenses including your lost day. Many will not.
Good luck
