Marina in Sausalito, CA

First time poster so I hope I am in the right place... to make a long story short we are looking to move our 36' sailboat to a marina in Sausalito, CA. Does anyone have any observations or recommendations? It appears that there are many marinas. We appreciate any suggestions.

Welcome to CF! How long have you been sailing in the bay area? When I'm over that way for races, engine work, or to listen to the Friday night jazz in the park, I stay overnight at Schoonmaker Marina. Seems like a good spot, friendly people, clean bathrooms, and easy parking. The other marinas closer to downtown are very hard to drive to or park in the summer with all the tourists and bicyclists. These are just my observations on the handful of times going over there.

For many years I kept VALIS at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor (the closest marina to the SF Bay). They are good folks and the location is perfect. Phone #: (415) 332-5000

And I strongly recommend Arawan Thai restaurant, which is a very short walk from the marina.

Re: Marina in Sausalito, CA

We have been in the bay off and on since 1999 (with a 10 year hiatus on the hard). We started in Benicia, moved to Richmond Marina Bay (car was stolen from the marina parking lot) and now she lays at Marina Village in Alameda. We are just tired of the 45 minutes of motoring down the estuary to get to the central bay. Sausalito looks like a good option for us (we live in Chico) so it's a 3 hour drive either way.

Thanks for the advice,
Rich

From Clipper yacht harbor in sausalito ( north end of the channel), it's still 10-15 minutes to open water. THough in summer it can be sailed. Lots O dinghy's kayaks to dodge in the channel.

Other options are paradise cay marina on the east side of Tiburon and lock lommond in San Rafael. Paradise dumps right into the bay. Lock Lommond has a 20 minute motor down the narrow channel San Rafael channel.

Added bonus they are some minutes closer then Sausalito. Last time I was in Sausolito all the marina's looked pretty full.

You might try brickyard cove in point Richmond as that's a nice area and saves a bridge toll and traffic on 101.

Yep, that was either autocorrect or a strange blonde moment. Not sure which... UGH.

Man, oh, man, does this thread stir the memory: 1978/9, on board in Sausalito with Sterling Hayden as a neighbor. Young, with hair, and not a care in the world. Carpe diem, and good luck finding a nice place in Marin.
