Ridiculous in the chance of survival at sea for that long.
I agree with Mausgras that he would initially had fishing gear, and over the months would have been denuded till he had nothing.
One of my reasons against survival for a year is the lack of variety in the diet.
There was a case in Australian history, cant find it on Google... Memory says was a shipwreck in Western Australia and the survivors washed ashore had nothing to eat except the plentiful oysters. But they eventually died because although there was plenty of them they only supplied some nutrients.
If this 13 months on a fishing boat turns out to be fact then its is still ridiculous... Survival against ridiculous odds.

Thats why he needs a proper interview. Yes, may need to be Columbo!

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'
anyone know what the nutritional value of turtle, fish, or seagull liver is?
EDIT:
"Doctors say he's severely dehydrated and low on vitamins and minerals," he said.(Christian Clay-Mendoza, a top Mexican trade official.)
Doctors said Alvarenga's limbs have started to swell, and they can't seem to keep him hydrated.
As u know, the biggest danger to severely malnutrition patients is when they start pigging out and drinking diet coke, similar to hyperthermia patients who drink hot beverages.

Hear, hear! Whatever happened out there is between him and his conscience. He did what was needed to survive? Good on him. Now let's leave the poor bugger to recover instead of tossing around endless pointless speculation and insinuations.

Yeah, that's why you see so many unhealthy vegetarians in the world where they don't get supplements (serious eye rolling here).

He's going to have to face the wrath of the victims mother.
Grieving mother of other castaway demands answers - CNN.com Video
This gives you a perspective of where he lived, who he worked with etc.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'
A Spaniard washes up in the Marshall Islands after 16 months at sea. Very tired he takes a bus to town to get medical help. The only seat on the bus was occupied by a little dog sitting next to a snooty seemingly well to do woman. The Spaniard politely asks if he can take the seat and the woman just turns her head and looks out the window incensed by this smelly bum so brazen as to want to displace her Poopsy a well-groomed Shih-Tzu. The weakend Spaniard goes up and down the bus now bumping along and sees no open seats or adequate place to rest so again he approaches the woman ad asks if he might kindly sit down as he is tired. The woman again looks away and mutters to herself "what a disgrace." So the Spaniard uses his remaining energy to lift the dog and tosses him on her lap and sits down in one big effort now unable to stand any longer. The gentleman behind him says "You Spaniards always do the wrong thing. You threw the wrong bitch out of her seat."

This story holds no water. The dog was listed as a him and clearly a Spaniard at sea for 16 months would have eaten the dog. Just sayin'

Scurvy? How come he isn't suffering scurvy symptoms? He has some I suppose but seems in great shape.

Obviously you missed the joke/slight about how this man with almost nothing survived yet some people that have all the nutritional resources in the world willingly deprive their body of what it was designed to eat. I apologize for not making that more clear. Next time i'll use more smiley faces.

That's a good question. Maybe he had some oranges when he left, but forgot all about it after a while.
The fact remains, he left Mexico in Dec. 2012, washed up in the Marshall Islands Jan 2014, and he's still alive. I don't believe in miracles, so I'd have to chalk this one up to a very strong will to live and a lot of luck.
