Maine Schooner Aground for 2nd Time this Summer

A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Coast Guard Station South Portland helped evacuate 49 passengers from the 59’ schooner Wendameen after the vessel ran aground in Casco Bay near Great Diamond Island on Saturday at about 6:00 p.m.

Wendameen was involved in another grounding in June of this year in a different location in Casco Bay, but passed a Coast Guard hull survey before being allowed back into service. Coast Guard marine casualty investigators will work to determine the cause of the grounding. In this most recent incident, the vessel ran aground close to low tide.

An old-timer in Harpswell once said to me, "I know all the rocks and ledges in Casco Bay. . . . . I've left bottom paint on every single one of them."

I wonder if the captain of Grounding #1 was the same as captain in Grounding #2? Or if #1 got the sack, leaving #2 to learn the same hard lesson.

From what I understand, it was a different captain this time.

But that is 3rd-hand information.
