Made it so far. Not a good day. Need fabrication suggestions Annapolis area

We are around 5000nm into our trip. We've been through so much and been trying desperately to make it home to Canada since the current world has turned upside down. Was light air sailing north of annapolis and heard a thunk sound and did a 360 so hard I almost fell over in the cockpit. Rudder is completely gone. As in all that's left is the post up through the hull and quadrant. Any recommendations for fiber glass fabricators in the area. Not sure where to find dimensions for the rudder but I may reach out to Bob and buy them from him if they aren't publicly out there. This one may ruin me haha. Gotta be back at work Sept 13 and just not seeing that happen.

Thanks. Tow boating right now and still in a depressed shock. I'll reach out to them

Try sailboat rudders in FL.. actually Foss foam... I have purchased from them. Top notch, good people.. I have been to their fabrication shop, met the owner, and seen the products. New rudder was primed for paint. If they do not have an exact match they might have something that will be close and work.

You are a little far north, but zimmermans in Mathews Virginia does fiberglass fabricating. They are quoting some for us now. I do know they have a facility in deale as well. Plus 2 others, but I'm not 100% sure where.
Terrible turn of events, losing it like that, but at least it happened inland.
Good luck

Miles Poor in Annapolis txpoors@gmsil.com

www.mrprefits.com

These guys helped me out a couple of times, once in Annapolis and again in the BVI. I used them for steel fabricating, fiberglass replacement, mechanical problems.

One of my neighbors at the boatyard bought a new rudder from Foss. They had all the specs on the original and were able to easily duplicate it exactly.

A rudder does not need to be super sophisticated to work. If you cant get a proper replacement a piece of 1 inch ply painted with resin and firmly bolted to the stock will get you home even if it is not as efficent. You dont say what the boat is but if it is an unsupoted spade rudder you will proably need some welding as the joint is such high stress. Mush easier with a skeg or any rudder with a lower mount. This should be something any expirence yard could do.

Re: Made it so far. Not a good day. Need fabrication suggestions Annapolis area

Be careful with Foss Foam Products of Florida. I purchased a rudder for my C & C Landfall 35 from them last year. I made and sent them a drawing of my old rudder and they duplicated all the dimensions exactly. The only problem was that the new rudder had the rudder post offset to one side causing the boat to turn to port. I called them about it and they said it was a common issue and their advice was to bolt a tab to the rudder to correct the problem. They didn’t offer to help with the issue. I wound up having the boat hauled and a fiberglass tab molded to the rudder. Cost me $1000. I was very lucky that my estimate of the tab size was just right and the problem went away.

Bert Jabin’s Yacht Yard’s has a dozen service companies on site. There’s nothing that can’t be done there. Not the cheapest place but you’ll get it done for sure.
