Looking to buy via a program. Explanation below.

Hello I am looking for a 35-42 foot Sailboat with Auto Tacking Rig that is owned or operated by someone who know longer wishes to use it or cannot. I will sail for them as a charter, rent it out to people and always be present on the boat. All Sales for charters, rents with me as captain all aboard will go to owner of boat until paid off. I just want to sail I love it, and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get one. Money is just a bit tight as of now, but willing to break my ass for it. I will sail it all summer long for all charters and the owner will receive all monies - money to eat and dock. Thanks Hope there is some interest out there for this. Boat must be in good working order. !!!

Thanks, Joshua. 347-617-5676 I live in Ny willing to drive up to 100 miles every weekend if need be.

Are you a licensed Captain?

And just to expand on S/V Illusion's question... Without a Coast Guard captains license, what you are proposing would be illegal.

Apart from the licensing, how do you hope to find enough paying charter guests to pay off for a boat, Marina fees and maintenance within a reasonable timeframe will be quite a task.

The sailing season in NY is relatively short ... guess day charter guests don’t like to join you in April or November. Effectively you probably only have a window of 3 - 4 months to cover the costs for 12 months AND pay the owner for the boat!

If you need a new set of sails ultimately you will not have the money as all the money went to the owner to pay off for the boat. Now the “business” is dead.

Work, save some money, buy a boat and pursue your dream

Typical boat owner here. I don't think you'll have much luck either. That's not something I'd ever consider unless circumstances were perfect.

If I were at my wits' end financially, and couldn't keep the boat, or was going to lose it anyway to liens, AND you were a licensed captain with a lot of charter experience, AND there was equity in the boat to try to recapture, AND my CPA and lawyer sorted the whole thing out, AND there were no other reasonable options, then I may consider it. Day chartering is more work and less $$$ than people usually think, and it's a LOT more wear and tear on the boat than regular use by a single owner. Doing it as a weekend job isn't going to be easy. There are successful charters in my neck of the woods. In season they're busy all week with tourists, and on the boats continually.

Work hard, save, buy a boat, get experience, and move up the LOA ladder to the rung you prefer. But hey, it never hurts to ask, right?
