Re: Longer term Florida Anchorage Suggestions Near Grocery Stores?

Just another thought on Manatee Pocket, there is a lot of maritime industry in South Stuart/Port Salerno if you need to get things done. There is even a yard to haul out at if you needed to.

Re: Longer term Florida Anchorage Suggestions Near Grocery Stores?

There's a small anchorage on the west side of the locks at Port Canaveral. With shoal draft you can get in close and a large cat has been there with the bows almost touching the beach. Several boats have been moored here for years. Cant say about car and dink stuff but its safe and has public bus trans. There are other places within a quarter mile that are used by a few. I live close and pass this area often in my skiff. If you are in the area give me a shout and I will give some local knowledge and try to help.

75' can't get to Titusville.

The A. Max Brewer Bridge, just south of the Titusville Marina/Mooring field, is a fixed bridge with a listed clearance of 65'. A 75' air draft boat could not get to the marina/mooring field from the south after entering the AICW via Port Canaveral/Canaveral Lock/Canaveral Barge Canal.

The Harris Saxon (South Causeway) Bridge, in New Smyrna Beach, is a fixed bridge with a listed clearance of 65'. A 75' air draft boat could not get to the marina/mooring field from the north after entering the AICW at Ponce de Leon Inlet.

There are two marinas, Harbortown and cape Crossing, on the Canaveral Barge Canal, that do not have fixed bridge limitations when coming from the Atlantic.

Yes on the south side. They also anchor on the north side behind the spoil island...deep water there. I go by the area weekly in my boat and crab traps are rare to non existant. A large ketch (mast too tall to go anywhere else) has been anchored there 3-4 yrs. A few other transient boats have been there at least a yr. It shoals as you go in and only multihulls can get in that section. When hurricanes hit you you can go directly into the barge canal. Several boats have been anchored along the edge of the barge canal for 2+ yrs since the marina changed hands.

Good luck getting a long term slip in the marinas on the barge canal.

What was that? Add another 6 feet? Sounds like a great idea! I'll be doing 20 knots in a zephyr. Ha ha

Yeah, illbe snowbirding/cruising, so it's more important to be able to sail well than to get into every nook and cranny of the icw.

If I know I'm going inland or into an area with low bridges, I plan to have a crane pull the mast for any of that stuff, then restep later.

Re: Longer term Florida Anchorage Suggestions Near Grocery Stores?

There's a really great anchorage in Miami Beach near Belle Island (Venetian Causeway) area. I'm not sure about your depth, but you can navigate from the south or the north to the spot. There's a great liveaboard community there, Flagler Memorial Island is an awesome beach spot with grills, and there's a Public right down a canal (about 200 yards) from the anchorage. Right on the canal and directly across from the Publixs is a floating dock that is free of charge, and most of the liveaboards use it. I brought my buddy over there on his 42 , and after 8 months has never had an issue being anchored. Look up "Collins Canal Dingy Landing" .

See you out on the water,
Pat

Thanks for the list.

Awwwww. I’ll miss that anchorage at Belle Island. I’ve stayed there a lot of times in the past. Now I’m paying the price for the higher performance boat. There is a 50ft and 65ft bridge on either side of that anchorage. I can no longer get in there. Depth is no problem since I draw 24 inches.

I’m also very familiar with the canal dock by Publix. It’s a fun area. But the bridges are all too low now. I’ve outgrown Miami Beach too, I guess. Old man. (Cough cough). Old man.
