Living Your Dream

For those of you who have tried, but FAILED to cut the land ties and sail away to far away places, for long periods of time, what is the number one reason you have not been able to do it?

Not sure if I understand response 2. Is that "I don't want to go" or "Kids don't want to go"?

I selected other.

I love my job, I love weekend and vacation sailing. I really feel an obligation to give my kid the very best chance at education and wouldn't be comfortable with home schooling.

However, when son goes off to college I move aboard for good. In teh meantime the longer I work the less retirement stress I will have...

Number 2 means:

Kids that either are too young in the eyes of the parent or, that are old enough to say they dont want to go i.e. teen aged kids.

Missing a "first mate". One needs to put a lot into this Dream to reap great rewards, but doing it alone takes four times the effort and it seems only a quarter as rewarding if there is noone there to share it with. Bad math...

Working on the boat, and working toward college graduation... and working on the cruising fund!

Clearly, to much working and not enough sailing!

I wouldn't say I failed, but we haven't left the dock (for the *big* trip yet):
  • Moved onto the boat.
  • Saving up money for 4-5 years of sailing.
  • Paying off the boat mortage.
  • Increasing my sailing / maritime skills.
  • Want to wait for my 401K to fully vest (and I want to load a bit more into it).
  • Get married, have a munchkin or two.

Keegan
I have a teenage son - last year of high school - who doesn't want to go. This does not mean my dream has failed. Quite the contrary, my dream is very much on track. I see this as a time constraint - no different than a seasonal weather window - just played out over a longer time period.

I went out for before and came back broke in my 30's. It was no problem at all, but now in my late 40's I don't want to have to come back. I'm getting the boat ready, and that's a pretty big project considering I have a firm list of must haves for this time around. The other big thing is I want my youngest child to have a year of kindergarten, which is the same as first grade was when I was a kid. And I want her to have a chance at t-ball, soccer, etc. Not every experience I want for my kids can be met by travelling by sailboat, but most of 'em can.

While we are finishing up the boat we are also finishing restoring a 200 year old post and beam home, it is basically done. It is going on the market in the spring, that will hopefully fund us for two years as long as the housing market does not totally collapse. Kids are gone, some money in the bank, a sturdy boat and a willing and loving wife.. We hope to leave in the late fall of 08 down the ICW to the paradise.....

Not that we can't sell the house, it's the last thing to be done and just went on the market.

Have a wife, two kids (age 12 and 8 ) and almost nothing that will stop us from going cruising . If you listen to your children what they want in their life , they would hung around home all day , watching TV and munching on snacks.
