Liquid Libations

Many talk of the fun and games of their cruising but I have yet to see what is their preferred solvent. For some amount of yrs I've traveled the gamut of whiskey (especially that of the sovereign crown) but now have returned home to my favored rum. Here in California it seems Bicardi Gold suits me well. I'm not a fan of the spiced rums. What say you?

It may depend on where you are and with whom you associate, because sometimes, a "cuppa" (tea or coffee) in the morning is a better way to get acquainted with folks than alcoholic beverages. Of course, sometimes, the alcohol reduces inhibitions and anxiety and lubricates social interaction.

Margaritas are great (as one woman I know says: "Tequila makes my clothes fall off")

Gin & Tonic is an old standby and still great

Otherwise we tend to stick with beer and wine

Preferred Rum... Havana Club.
Preferred Gin... Tanqueray.
Preferred Vodka... 'Stoli'.. outa the freezer
Preferred Brandy... Cheap like Soberano..
Preferred beer... Anything but Budweiser and Millers.. if you can (sadly) call lager a beer
Whiskey... can't stand the stuff..

I enjoyed the discussion about beer in a different thread. It was surprising that Australia seems to have some sort of issues with price and quality in beer. It would seem logical that such a condition would spur sales of spirits and wine. Certainly spirits are easier to keep on the boat than beer.

Neither can I, but whisky (without the "e") is a different matter entirely. Especially a good Islands malt like ArdBeg or Talisker.

Interesting. We have exactly the same taste.

If you can find it, I have found Nicaragua's Flor de Cana (with a tilde over the "n") rum to be even better than Havana Club.

Dark rum. Usually with water, lime or no lime, ice or no ice, it's fine. Then there's the sipping rum. At least 8 years old.

Aren't all libations liquid?

I prefer a good sipping rum such as Diplomatico Reservo Exclusiva (Venezuelan) or El Dorado 15 year (Guyana) or similar.

A good single malt such as Oban or Dinwiddie will suffice too.

A nice IPA for beer

good bourbon straight up .. wild turkey or maker's mark .. brewed in kentucky. coffee in the morning

The 7 year Flor De Cana is better than the 5 and the 12 year, IMHO. Really good with a bit of pineapple juice mixed in over ice.

Mount Gay Extra Old is also a good rum, but I think it's way over priced.

Tequila: Breaks me out in handcuffs
The rest: Whatever I can get my hands on.

Back in the day, We found a dark rum out of Hawaii, Whalers, it came in a cheap clear bottle with a cheap label, and was only 10 $ for a liter or quart size. We had a standing order with any of your friends that went, to bring back a case. It was very rich and had an earthy after taste, hands down my favorite, straight up with a pinch of lime was best. I don't know if they make it anymore, I haven't been that way in a few years. I like Tanqueray for my G&Ts. I am still conducting field research on the best tequila, I have heard a story about a really thick tequila that comes in a wooden cask, out of Mexico, this is an unconfirmed report by a fellow seaman so it could be BS. I would like to explore making my own Mango brandy or cordial. I'll be looking into those options. Whiskey "Old Weller" don't know if they still make it. I would like to try a single malt scotch, I have purchased a couple of bottles on different occasions and haven't gotten the first taste. Next time, I'm not going to tell anyone I have some. I think a trip to Scotland may be in order to insure I am getting the genuine article.

I love rum, probably have 40 or 50 varieties at my house (none are spiced, except the ones I am given as gifts. None are Bacardi, Sailor Jerry, Kraken, Captain Morgan, etc). The largest number of great rums, in my opinion, come from Venezuela.

Here are some of my favs:

Santa Theresa 1796 (Venezuela)
Mount Gay Extra Old (Barbados)
Mount Gay Black Barrel (same)
Ron del Barrilito three star (PR - very unique flavor)
El Dorado aged rums (Guyana)

My "every day" (and I do mean every day) rum is Flor de Cana 4 year, I actually don't like the flavor of their older rums but I can get 1.75L bottles of this for <$25.
