Re: Life Raft Discussion.... Yes or No?

But you have a relatively huge boat. We a 44, old school cutter, not a lot of options.

And the 33’? Forget about it. VERY limited options.

OK, I understand. Obviously, you just have to do the best you can. I think somewhere aft is generally going to be less vulnerable than somewhere forward.

It may also be that a whole wave crest falling on you might invalidate whatever measures you take.

There are certain risks which will exist despite all reasonable measures having been taken.

Re: Life Raft Discussion.... Yes or No?

Sadly ironic in the case of Kalaerin, that had they not had the life-raft, the coach roof may have not been damaged, which may have led to them not shipping as much water, which may have prevented the bilgepumps from clogging and the engine from stopping leading to them not requiring rescue in the first place.

All extremely speculative obviously, but perhaps in this case fate was quite cruel.

Water came in through a damaged coachroof? I didn't see that. I thought the water came in through an open companionway hatch.

That is true in a production boat. One-offs are different, I'm having a dinghy bay in a 35 footer so a separate locker for a raft wouldn't be a problem.

How do you know the hatch was open 'pre event'?

The report says.. 'I was suddenly on the ceiling and tons of water came in through the companionway hatch. '

It does not say it was open before the knock down ...

Yes, thank you. I should have written "left open or knocked open in the event".

But in any case, the companionway hatch is apparently where the water came from, not from a damaged coach roof, unless I missed something.

It's chilling because I also got water through the companionway hatch in my knock-down, enough to destroy a computer (the only damage). I sure won't make that mistake again, and I think we should all pay attention to the security of our scuttles and wash boards.

Re: Life Raft Discussion.... Yes or No?

According to the owner the Lewmar Ocean hatch that had been securely dogged for the entire 19 day passage was ripped open and was the source of a large part or majority of the flooding.

Apologies, you are quite correct.. I thought I remembered reading that some of the roof was missing but infact it was the dodger.

Eye opening that so much water came through the companionway hatch alone.

I wonder if the dodger took some of the roof with it?

It's a pretty big opening. I'm here to tell you from first hand experience, that a TON of water can come down it in the twinkle of an eye.
