Life expectancy of items

On the following 3 items I was wondering what is the life expectancy for them. Generator, Air conditioning, water purifier, I was told some water units are only good for a few years. If you have had them forever is there something you are doing to make them last longer. Would you be worried if they were used.

I can answer at least one question. A generator will last a long time provided it is properly maintained. The most important thing are oil changes. I think a period of at least ten years is very realistic if properly maintained
