Lewmar or Delta

Looking to purchase a used plow anchor for my 25' Catalina. Use will be mainly S FL. Sort of narrowed it down to whats available, a 14 lb Delta, 22 lb Delta, or a 16.5 lb Lewmar Claw. I know the 22 is bigger than I need, but a guy that's on the hook down here says to use something in the 20's. Your thoughts?

Re: Lewmar or Delta

Kinda tough to call 25lbs too much, in that it's easy to lift. But given what used anchors cost, especially Claws, I'd pick up both the bigger Delta & the Claw. Plus a couple of boat lengths of chain for each, as you can always use a shorter piece, once you see how well they set, & if there's much on the bottom to cause chafe.

So that the total bill for all of that should be well under $150, not including rope rode. And most of it's resellable later on, should you not like it.
HTH

PS: If you do any digging around on here regarding anchors, you'll see that most are fans of "oversized" ones.

Re: Lewmar or Delta

Uncivilized has the right of it. I would at least pick up the 22 lb. Delta and 50' of chain.
I used to anchor my 26' gaffer with a 35 lb. CQR and was happy with that.

Re: Lewmar or Delta

For claw, get the 22#, or even better the 33#. The claw anchors do not hold as well when too small. I use a 44# lewmar claw on a 34', 13,000# boat and it holds well enough in 40 knots.

When the wind is blowing like snot, no one ever says, gee my anchor is too big.

Re: Lewmar or Delta

I have a 44 lb Delta on my Hunter 356. It came with a 22 lb Delta which I still have as a backup. I have used it in SW Florida as well as on the Tenn-Tom and Kentucky lake. With proper scope, min 5/1, preferred 7/1 has held in 45 knots in mud. You can't go wrong with a larger anchor.

It's a light 25 ft boat! Any of those will work. I would go the Delta over the claw though, especially in FL. Bigger is always nice in a blow.

Thanks to all for the replies. I think I'll go for the Delta 22 and at least 50' of chain.

It's hard for me to believe that there are only three anchors available. And why "used"? If someone is selling an anchor, it's because it didn't work for them.

In a world where only those three choices exist, I would pick the heaviest. I use a 33 lb Lewmar Claw. I have a 22 lb generic claw that I would sell cheap but you would have to come and get it.
