Usually it's a spring/fall thing but 10-15'ers aren't uncommon in the summer.

Never say never, but these kinds of storms are uncommon in the prime summer sailing months on the Great Lakes. At least up here on Superior it is the Fall and winter that is pretty ugly. That said, we regularly see 3 meter seas (~10 ft) during the summer and 30+ knots.
