Jon Sanders complete's 10th circomnavagation

He arrived in Carnarvon, WA aboard s/v Perie Banou II, an S&S 39, on Wednesday the 20th of December, 14 months after departing Fremantle. The 78-year old, had open heart surgery in 2015.

Jon is not all that well/widely known, but he did a solo triple non-stop circumnavigation in 1988 aboard s/v Parry Endeavour, a 71,000 NM journey that took 658 days to complete.

We got to know Jon during our winter in Fremantle - the truly classic 'character'.

thanks for the heads-up Evans. A remarkable set of voyages for sure, but I can not but wonder at the motivation for endlessly circling the globe. He surely marches to a distant drummer that I can't hear! But good on him for accomplishing so much, following his own star.

Jim

A few years back, I downloaded his log book of the 3 year trip. What I remember most is how normal/consistent he wrote throughout the trip.

It seemed to me that Moitessier's log entries (excerpts are in his book "the long way") got more dreamy (I mean nothing bad by dreamy, I just can't think of a better word) as his trip continued.

But Sanders truly seems to suffer no effects from isolation.

For his twice around circumnavigation in 1983, he wrote that he was provisioned via tender at least once maybe more (memory is hazy). That was a 34? foot boat.

For the 3x circumnavigation, I think he provisioned over 3 tonnes of food. That boat was 47 feet though.

edit: 2x trip was 81-82 not 1983; 3x trip was done with only food already aboard;

I have had the opportunity to share a beer or two with Jon.

When his S&S 34 Parry Endeavour was hung in the Fremantle Maritime Museum (it was hung at an angle that was actually experienced by Jon), he just said: "Looks scary, but it didn't seem that bad over there..."

Jon is a very unassuming legendary sailor. He sails for the love of it.

Upon reading this I was thinking that Jeanne Socrates could rest up a bit before having another crack at the 'oldest solo great capes etc etc'... I think she is 75.

But I see that JS went via Panama this time...

Seven times around the world? He must have been looking for an honest, intelligent politician. Most politicians are "all at sea", so good show Jon, you have confirmed what we all thought.

It was a privilege to tie up to next to "Perie Banou II" and meet Jon in Noumea, New Caledonia earlier this year. From all accounts, this man and his boat don't spend much time at rest.
