Jeanneau vs Beneteau
Need advice - choosing between Jeanneau SO 50 DS and Beneteau Oceanis 48. Or for a first boat, would it be better to start smaller, J 41 DS vs. Oceanis 41?

Re: Jeanneau vs Beneteau
Are you thinking new or second hand. What is your budget for the boat and any additional equipment? and finally were are you thinking of buying.
Is this just a pipe dream or is there a reason why you need a 50ft boat? have you any experience of sailing?

Re: Jeanneau vs Beneteau
Thinking of brand new. Max spend is probably EUR 350k. I've looked at many models and sort of narrowed down my list to these two brands. Curious about cruisers' views on hull and rig quality as well as sea keeping capabilities of Jeanneau vs Beneteau.
I just started sailing. Have very few miles logged. I just got my RYA skipper license. I just thought a 50 footer will have more deck space for diving equipment. Thinking of putting 4-6 tanks and compressor, plus generator and
aircon. I'm open to starting with a 40 footer if that's a better way to start cruising life (weekends only).
Thanks.

Personally , there. It much in it, but based on my experience, the Jeanneaus have a slight edge on sea keeping.

Re: Jeanneau vs Beneteau
Very different hulls. The one from the Oceanis 48 is more modern.
Why do you not consider the SO 509 that has a better and more modern hull than the DS50?
Regarding a 50ft for first sailboat only if you have lots of experience sailing other boats. There are many things that are much easier to learn on a smaller boat.

I spotted a Bavaria 50 OCEAN on yacht world. Has all the bells and whistles you need and it's built like the proverbial brick house. Even has an art extension for your diving. Save some dosh and go dive in Palau too. Diving instructor here. 😃

Hi Polux, I though the 509 and 50DS have the same hull. That's what I read about the 409 and 41 DS.

Hi Eleuthera 2014,
I looked at the brand new Bavaria Cruiser 51. I liked it at first, but now leaning more towards the Jeanneau.
I went diving in Palau last year. Awesome! Have you heard about S\V Delos? They sail and dive around the world on the same boat as yours.

The 50DS is the last production hull of the previous generation (if you exclude the 53 and 57). It's only the 41DS and the 44DS that are based on hulls from the Sun Odyssey 9 series boats. So there is a fairly large difference between the 50DS and the 509 in terms of overall design and performance. I suspect it's only a matter of time until the 50DS production is stopped in favor of something based off the 509 hull.

Re: Jeanneau vs Beneteau
Hi Garretw,
They also position the 469 as the little sister of the 509. That might be a cheaper option, but would it have the space for the add-ins I mentioned- dive tanks, compressor, generator? How's your 44DS, have you been sailing it for a long time now?

It is not what jeanneau says or what correspond to the information they provide regarding the DS50 and the 509. Garretw is right about what he says.
JEANNEAU shipyard, boatbuilder for sailing : sailboat, motorboat, powerboat racing boat cruising fishing yachting - Jeanneau Yard
As you can see not only the hulls are very different (being the 50DS an older design) as the dimensions are also very different namely the beam. I believe the 50DS is going out of production soon, being substituted by a new version with the 509 hull. That's why they are making a nice discount over it but attention because you would lose that on resale value.
509:
Length overall 15.38 m / 50'5"
Hull length 14.98 m / 49'1"
Hull beam 4.69 m / 15'4"
Light displacement 13900 kg / 30644 lbs
Standard keel draught 2.28 m / 7'5"
50DS:
Length overall 15.07 m / 49'5"
Hull length 14.75 m / 48'4"
Hull beam 4.49 m / 14'8"
Light displacement 13400 kg / 29542 lbs
Standard keel draught 2.15 m / 7'

Do your own due diligence before trying to decide on what first boat to buy.

Re: Jeanneau vs Beneteau
Thanks Polux. That's helpful. So that's why the dealer is pushing the 50DS and offered a good discount.

Indeed. We will dive everywhere too... The big difference is that my GF's breasts are not as pert as their girls!!!😄
Comment regarding the Bavaria Ocean series; these are true cruising boats engineered and equipped for a no excuse RTW sailing. Very different from a Cruiser 51. Look at Yachtworld, should be informative for you. GL in your search
