Is sailing worth it?
Hello! I'm new to the sailing world, my boyfriend wishes to buy a boat and sail for a while, I honestly have never spent more than 3 days aboard anything. I would love to hear some experiences so I can form my own opinion instead of just listing to him go on and on about how great it will be. I kind think it would get boring after a while, but I don't know. I would really appreciate any feedback you guys can provide!

If you listened to us then you would be forming opinions of other peoples opinions. Just go a do it with him. You may really get addicted.

Re: Is sailing worth it?
The best way to find out if you enjoy something is to try it.
Personally I didn't enjoy it when I first tried it almost 4 decades ago, and feeling about the same second time around.
My wife likes it more than I do, but it is not a passion for either of us.

Re: Is sailing worth it?
MicGem, in our family it's a passion. We all sail and love it mostly.........But from an outside point of view it's debatable. It's slow, can be cold, wet and scary sometimes. Not too mention if you can't switch off or enjoy your surroundings it can be boring
As for being worth it. Well I was in a friend's holiday unit the other day and I realised just how screwed sailing is. 10 years ago we both had $50,000, we invested in a depreciating asset that costs a lot to maintain. My friend invested in a appreciating asset that gives him some income as well. But on the emotional balance sheet we have had and still keep having these wonderful family experiences. I keep telling myself that coffins don't have pockets.
Cheers

Re: Is sailing worth it?
The question is a bit unclear. You have spent up to 3 days on board something, so you must have some idea if you like it. But you say he wants to sail for "a while", which might mean doing nothing but sailing for an extended period.
Are you really trying to determine how much sailing you want to do? Short outings vs. going around the world, or something in between?
FWIW my wife and I both love sailing but we stick to coastal cruising in chunks ranging from three to fifteen days. I would have no problem doing an occasional overnight but she isn't up for it and that's fine with me. I have done one ocean trip with offshore stretches up to a week and found it somewhat boring.

Re: Is sailing worth it?
I would suggest just you and BF charter a yacht for a couple of weeks, one week is not enough. Do a monohull for one week and swap over to a cat for second week - see what you think.

Re: Is sailing worth it?
You might also be one of the small percentage of people that simply don't like sailing or anything to do with sailing.
You don't have to take a week long or month long trip to discern this. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing.
Sailing is mostly a guy thing and while some notable trips have been done by women, they are a rare breed.
Sailing is not to be confused with living aboard a small cramped space, all the while being tossed around every which way, but the two go and in hand with each other and it's not possible to separate the two.

So what if the query was generated by AI? If it causes an interesting discussion (and even if some of the responding posts are AI creations) then it has served a useful purpose.
And for sure, there have been plenty of human source questions that failed that test but did not generate snarky responses here.

Welcome aboard CF, MicGem,
If you're into fancy fingernails and spike heels, and do not enjoy swimming or SCUBA, or backpacking, or camping, most likely you will not enjoy sailing.
As mentioned above, figure out a way to go sailing, or take a dinghy sailing course and see if it turns you on.
If what is really going on here is that you are considering investing in a boat with your boyfriend, be warned. All boats are depreciating assets. I wouldn't do it unless I knew I liked sailing AND the boyfriend well enough.

Re: Is sailing worth it?
Island Time who knows if it's AI? One things for sure I could easily post something similar on a camping forum. The appeal of camping goes right over my head despite the family enjoying it. I always wonder if it's worth it, all that mucking around just to sleep inside some fabric shelter.
Cheers

Re: Is sailing worth it?
If you are high maintenance, like long nails, fancy perfumes, handbags, high heeled shoes and worry about what your next new kitchen should be you are probably not cut out for sailing. If you are self sufficient, like to get stuck in, enjoy learning new stuff, meeting people from all walks of life and solving physical and mental problems on a day to day basis you will be fine. It's a spectrum most sailors are somewhere in the middle.
