interior cushion reupholstery

In the process of recovering our interior cushions in ultraleather. In examining the original upholstery I find that the seat covering and some of the box faces had ¼” foam sewen to the underside. There was no Dacron batting wrap, so I gather the foam took its place. Several questions: #1 Is my assumption correct and what would be the pros and cons to doing it one way or the other, foam or batting.. I would think the batting would give more body initially, but would it deflate over time and leave the ultraleather loose? On the other hand the foam may not, but it wouldn’t be as soft. #2 Do you think it a more cost efficient way?
Thanks
