Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

Waterford Ireland wanted to see insurance papers for a two weeks stay. Clearing in at Portimao Portugal, Porto Santo and Las Palmas I was asked for insurance to anchor in the harbor. In Newfoundland it has never been asked for. I rarely touch a dock so it's pretty much a non issue.

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

Two night stay in Canaveral marina (forgot the name) wanted proof of insurance and boat registration. (Not an Issue because I had it). That’s the only time I’ve ever been asked.

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

I cruise in the Northeast US, most ask if I have insurance to which I say yes but they don’t ask for the proof. Couple of marinas on LIS have asked for my policy number but never asked to see the policy.

Interesting ... They have never asked me about insurance in 4 separate visits.

In fact I've never been asked about insurance at any marina I've stopped at in BC.

You mean enter a port, literally? You can enter and leave ports around here (Barcelona-Costa Brava) if want without contacting the Capitan de Port, but if you pull alongside anyplace other than a fuel dock usually someone will come by and ask what you are up to. Some ports are less picky about fees for a couple of hours in a slip for lunch, but they all want to see the boat paperwork if you tie for anything other than fuel or a super quick stop alongside.

In Spain every transient slip we've used (stayed in) has asked for the basic paperwork: insurance certificate, and a boat registration to document the actual size of the boat and the ownership. We usually just hand them packet that has everything in it. Some ports hang on to the packet until you are ready to leave; paid I suppose.

We've never been asked for anything on a mooring ball.

Key West, Florida.

Didn't ask for proof, but asked if you had insurance, who with, and and how much. Don't recall if they asked for a policy number.

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

Every marina I have stayed in (from 1 night to 1 month) on the East Coast of Australia, plus New Zealand, has required proof of insurance. I haven't noticed if liability only (3rd party) insurance would be acceptable, since I always just provided proof of full (comprehensive) insurance.

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

We seldom stay in marinas, but Crandon Park on Key Biscayne on two occasions when we needed more 125V for repairs did than our inverter could supply and Fernandina Beach where we stopped to sit out a tropical storm asked. Both wanted to see a certificate of insurance. We are liability only with wreck removal and environmental coverage, and that was accepted.

I'm talking marinas, all EU marinas require liability at least..

Never been asked for insurance information for a mooring in Marathon.

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

Only once ever, in Huatulco Mexico, for a several-day's marina stay.
I had an expired fire insurance paper from when I built the boat, and the clerk checked the box and took the money. If I hadn't had the expired insurance doc, he would have taken a green doc with a picture of Andrew Jackson. Viva Mexico.

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

In my experience (US, east of the Mississippi) every marina has an insurance requirement policy in the fine print of the rental agreement. Very few actually ask, and fewer still want to physically see it.

The very few times I've been asked to show it were at municipal or state/provincial marinas who seem to be more "by the book" than private ones. Thinking this through, I wouldn't be surprised to see more marinas asking for it, as they are getting bought up by large corporate owners. I haven't noticed it yet because I avoid those places to the extent possible.

Every marina in the Caribbean wants a copy of your binder on record. Every marina we visited on the east coast asked if we had insurance.
