Install Chicken line on sailboat?

I'm still new on sailing and try to learn as much as I can. Today a sailor told me to install a "chicken line" on my boat, which I never heard of, and he was saying that it is not the safety jack lines is different. I try to google about this and not much information about it.

Anybody can guide what is this "chicken line" used for? And any example of yours? I will consider to install it on my 35' sailboat need some inspiration

Re: Install Chicken line on sailboat?

Usually it's to keep you from being flung forward on fast boats like beach cats during maybe a pitch pole or hitting a big wave.

When sailing along at 20 knots or more and suddenly coming to a stop, It get's interesting. I never used one though during the 15 years I raced them

Monohulls are so heavy and slow you shouldn't need one or you could probably just use your tether which you should have anyway (and maybe shorten it up some)

Re: Install Chicken line on sailboat?

Sounds like your sailor was pulling your leg a touch if you're sailing a Redwing.
Had a friend who got catapulted from the transom of an AC foiling cat. He was glad to be wearing a helmet and kevlar jacket when he landed 70' out in front of where the boat had stopped. A chicken line might have given him whiplash and broken his back though, by bringing him up short. Choose your safety gear carefully.
