gawds it is COLD in ny state in spring winter and fall and hot as almost hades in summer--must be the humidity. you will love upstate--please do the hudson river to north troy. it is GORGEOUS. i learned to sail there..
ny city is all well and good but not a good example of what is new york state. gresat place to visit yada yada.... do go up the hudson. you will enjoy it.
btw--upstate is civilized and actually has boat yards..lol..between the apple trees....

Re: I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

My rule of thumb for planning is 100 miles a day, or 1000 miles a week. How long do you think the trip will take (1500nm)?

I hope you post the story of your trip when you arrive in NYC.

Fair winds for the trip. Another thumbs up from us for Bermuda. Great place and home of Goslings Black Seal.... best rum we've found, but we diligently keep looking :-)

Fair winds and smooth sailing MarkJ. And when you get to NY don't miss the chance to see the Gustav Klimpt painting, "Portrait of Adele Bloch" at the Neue Museum. It is the painting featured in the current movie, "Woman in Gold."

Have a great trip and if you get sick of NY, Boston isn't a bad trip with lots to see and I'll join in with sailorboy to buy you a few rounds.

Re: I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

Seems a shame to bypass Bermuda by 100 miles........... just saying!

Oh, and the customs and immigration policies have become much more reasonable in the last few years. Many more boats are stopping in just for a day or two just to break up the passage.

Is it still cheaper if you get it duty free? Visiting yachts can order it from Goslings and they will deliver it to the customs house. Doesn't need to be a large amount either. You pick it up when you leave. About half the price that you pay in shops.

Re: I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

Problem with stopping in Bermuda, is that its impossible to leave until you're out of money (which happens too fast there). I'm all for a straight passage...just get it done!
