Many years ago my brother and I were racing a small dingy at a club we had never sailed at before. The fleet tacked across the bay, much to our amusment, instead of remaining on course to the mark. We understood why when we found ourselves in the middle of rocks. Somehow we lucked on a passage through and cleaned up the field.
To this day we still insist it was superior navigating skills.

J24s get bad mouthed a lot but I like them. Of course with my limited experience that's not much of an endorsement.

In terms of one class racing, it's not a complete arm and leg to be competitive. In terms of boat crew skill and teamwork, it is very important in order to win races.
