I Want to Sail

Hello,

I am currently stuck in university... but I had the bright idea of dropping that and going sailing!

I have no idea how to get started (never really sailed before), so was wondering if there are any suggestions on how to kick off my travels. My first step is...

...the boat:

I need a sailboat, but I don't have much money to get one. I was wondering if there are any sources where I would be able to find a sailboat for really cheap, preferably free (Ontario region).

Any suggestions/information is helpful.

Why not try crewing on a boat to begin with?

I have no experience sailing, how difficult is that going to make getting into a crew? And is it paid, volunteer, or do I have to pay them (generally speaking)?

A lot of boats around the GTA that would surely appreciate crew.

And if you like it, than you can try some of the crew sites or on here to find some people looking for crew.

And there is no such thing as an inexpensive boat. Especially if it is free.

Re: I Want to Sail

All situations are different. On larger yachts etc, you might be paid but you will be working.

Smaller boats that people are simply looking for others to help them, you might be asked to chip in for your share of food and fuel etc.

Other times the owner might cover those expenses if they really need crew.

Usually whats most important is a willingness to learn, able to listen to instructions and follow them, and not getting sea sick.

Cheap boats are possible, although unconventional

Here is a site for free boats. Plan on a project boat though.
