I Need help with these Questions

Hello All,

Im reaching out to seek some information about the following. I have undertaken a new project boat 1981 Cheoy Lee 43 LRMS and these are my first jobs/questions.

1. How much Primer, Topside and anti-foul does a Cheoy Lee 43 Require?

2. Im choosing to roll Internationals Perfection topside paint, what foam roller is best for polyurethane?

3. Brush recommendations for Roll N Tipping? Ive seen 4 inch foam brushes mentioned.

4. The Hull will be sand blasted, keel to toe rail, any suggestions or lessons learnt from this?

5. Does anyone know where to source parts for a Cheoy Lee 43, I'm in need of some new windows.

6. Does anyone know what the sail specifications are for this model, I'm in need of some new sails eventually.

7. Any cheoy lee 43 specialists know of common issues or jobs to start first. Ive tackled the decks, chainplates, leaky hatches etc.

Thanks in advance.

You've got to be kidding, sandblast or soda blast topsides?? If yes, add lots of fairing and sanding.

Re: I Need help with these Questions

Neil, we don't kid around here.

The only reason Im considering blasting the topsides back to gelcoat is the topside paints in a bit of a bad way, see attached image. I would place the primer over this current paint but im unsure what type of paint it is, one part paints don't work with the primer I'm looking to use. Which is inter protect by international. Any thoughts?

Give the currant topside paint a good scrub with a rag soaked in acetone ,if the paint comes off it’s single pack ,if no movement it’s probably a type of two pack .⛵️⚓️

Re: I Need help with these Questions

Spoke with Cheoy Lee, they're saying the original 43 had only gelcoat for the finish, so I'll probably sand that back for the inter-protect primer. Any ideas to remove the blue strip before the toe rail? The paints peeling across that whole strip.

Same test with acetone rag. If the stuff starts to dissolve, it's one component. Use paint stripper and thereafter acetone, followed by sanding.
Alternative scraper & heat gun.

Probably it is only the blue stripe painted with a one component paint, I tell you about sandblasting because it is a very aggressive way to remove topcoat, leaving the gel very porous, needing hig build primers, fairing most likely + finish primer + topcoat, you're going to spend a lot of money.

One way to see if the paint is one component, take the most aggressive masking tape you see, 3m 2090 or 2800, stick a piece of tape well stuck, pull it after a few minutes, if the paint is coming off possibly is a one component paint , acetone and the thinners of 2 component paints can also give you an indication, sanding a small square , you can see it to.

If it is only chipping on the blue strip, probably the rest of the hull is gel or 2-component paint, make sure before you do it.

Re: I Need help with these Questions

Probably 3 gal antifoul; one gal topside for the hull, at least one for the decks and house.
You might consider upgrading to Awlgrip--I hear Interlux is phasing out Perfection, and you'll want future paints to match.
Can't go wrong with 545 primer, no matter what topcoat.
For urethane paints I like the yellow super-thin phenolic core foam rollers from Redtree. The foam is yellow, the core is red.

Re: I Need help with these Questions

You need to sand the single part paints off the topside, not blasting it. The painter guy Frankie Busbong on YouTube just did a whole hull in a couple of hours.

For paint, all these are Dutch products, you can’t go wrong with any of them (International, Awlgrip, Epifanes). I use Awlgrip but hear very good reports about Epifanes as well.

Re: I Need help with these Questions

I can't get my hands on Epifanes or AWLGRIP easily in Aus and haven't seen many people rolling n tipping them, so I might have to stick with International. Ive been quoted for the following. All prices are in Litres and AUD.

International Perfection Pro 6L Kit - Tinted to Platinum x 2 $1,330.00
International Poly Thinner #9 4Lt x 1 $110.00
International Perfection Undercoat 3Lt Kit x 2 $630.00
International Inter-Protect White 4Lt KIT YPA401/A4LT x 2 $580.00
International Thinner #7 4Lt YTA061/4LT x 1 $110.00
International Micron Extra 2 Antifoul Black YBC704/10AP/AM 10Lt x 1 $695.00
International Micron Extra 2 Antifoul Black YBC704/4AP/AM 4Lt x 1 $285.00

Total = $3740 AUD

Re: I Need help with these Questions

If you are going to do roll and tip , I do not recommend Awlgrip, Awlgrip is for Pro`s , for small details or small jobs it can be fun, but for 43 ft of boat it is a risk.

Have you considered doing the prep yourself and hiring someone to Spray Gun your hull? This way you will need less material in topcoat paint and it will look better.

Re: I Need help with these Questions

Whereznorth awesome boat, I wondered who was going to buy her when I spotted her going cheap on Facebook. Nothing wrong with International paint. Your probably going to need 4 litres of Primocon as a primer for the antifouling unless there's already Micron antifouling on the hull. You might be a bit light on undercoat if the topsides are badly dinged and you need to apply another coat of undercoat after spot filling and sanding. You might also go to Supercheap Auto and get some cheap multi purpose thinner for cleaning brushes and wiping down stuff. Gladstone has a spray booth next to the travel lift and you would get a better job spraying I think. That's unless you can keep the topsides out of the direct sunlight while rolling and tipping.
Cheers

Re: I Need help with these Questions

I've had good results, doing a roll and tip, with the two part polyurethane paints.

It takes some quick work to do it right, as you want to keep a wet edge. I would paint in from top to bottom in 3-4' wide areas, before moving on the nest 3-4' section.

If possible have the boat positioned so you have sun in the morning on one side, and son in the afternoon on the other side. Paint the side in the shade first.

If the hull is in really bad shape, you could try painting it first with an epoxy paint, then sand it, which will provide a good base for the polyurethane.

I do not have direct experience with this paint but am sure it will be fine. With Awlgrip, for light colors you can just roll without tipping if you get the thinning right and use the correct rollers (high density foam mini rollers, either 4” or 6” wide). It gives results equal to spraying. I recommend you experiment with that because it can save a lot of work. Don’t be afraid to thin it more to get the result that you like.
