I got scammed out of $1462 for S&H of a boat I am selling!

If you know or believe a cheque to be suspicious or fraudulent, please don’t try and lodge it /cash it to “ play with the scammers”. You are a actually an accessory to the crime at that point.

Paypal came through for me. I have no complaints.

Re: I got scammed out of $1462 for S&H of a boat I am selling!

To all the people who advise not to use Paypal - you make a mistake...
Paypal is as safe as can be, BUT - you have to use it as it should properly be used.
You may and should check any transaction through your Paypal account.
Never directly answer mails that present themselves as coming from Paypal and claiming that there is some action needed from you to resolve some security issue.
Go to your account and check.

I am using Paypal as above and never had any problem. To the contrary, they have solved issues where the shipper was not true to his word.

Actually, for me the takeaway is to USE Paypal, but ensure that it is REALLY Paypal that you are dealing with!

I do the same thing, although I don't deposit the check. That can possibly open you up to legal issues and bank fees. I've got a file around here somewhere full of FedEx envelopes with fake checks in them. I at least have the satisfaction of costing them the FedEx charges!

I got another fake Paypal email yesterday. Watch out for those!!!
I right click on the email without opening and it typically shows some bizarre address. That's your sign.

Re: I got scammed out of $1462 for S&H of a boat I am selling!

Don't laugh but it's AOL. I kept it because I have the best email address in the world there. I think the scams just came through because I had been using Paypal a fair bit lately and I think it might be Google that somehow tracked me and sent out alerts to all that pay. Just bought an ebike on Friday so excited for that delivery.

Re: I got scammed out of $1462 for S&H of a boat I am selling!

To the OP - there is no Robert Podlewski or Douglas Glancy, they may exist but it's not who took your money, those people have moved on to the next mark.

Crappy that it happened but there things to do in these cases.

1) Report any and all information to the FCC. If all you do is complain you got scammed on an internet forum then nothing can happen.

https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us

2) NEVER - NEVER - NEVER click ANY link in your email box from ANY of the places you have financial information. Did I say NEVER? Because I mean NEVER!

If you get an email you simply visit their website or their app and login, it's that easy.

3) ONLY pay people via methods that allow for recourse by YOU. Money Gram? No. PayPal Friends and Family? No. Mastercard/Visa has protections, PayPal (with fees) has protections.

I spend a LOT of time online and have purchased 1000's of items (some high dollar pool cues included) over the years and have NEVER been scammed but then I trust no-one. I once got kicked out of a car dealership when the salesman told me the bank had a "fee" they wouldn't waive. When he walked away from his desk I picked up HIS phone and used HIS rolodex (it was in the 90's ) and called the bank to confirm, they informed me there is no fee.

Point being - if there is a transaction that involves online funds and a product you don't physically have in your hands you need to be very diligent and it's OK to say no to a sale, it's not being an a-hole - it's protecting your hard earned money.

There is nothing wrong with PayPal as long as you are communicating with the real PayPal.

Always look at the address of that email before opening. If it's from some crazy email with typically a bunch of random letters and digits like xifhfg4785tnnbvbnvhgut@gmail then it's fake. This is not limited to PP but is true for most scams.

Real Paypal emails are from Paypal.com.

I agree with Thomn, nothing wrong so don't know why Planet Express has posted that. As Sand Crab said, just make sure its Paypal you dealing with. Not difficult really, so safe to ignore Planet Express's advice.

It's not uncommon for scammers to use a slightly different URL. Many people simply wouldn't notice if a link read "papyal.com" or some other variation.

In what benighted backwards country do people still do business with things like cheques and MoneyGram?

Oh right.. the good ol' US of A. What a surprise. When are you lot planning on joining the 21st century?
