I Could Use a Hand With An Assignment

For an English class at the university, we have started writing our semester project, an Ethnography, which is the study of people within their own culture. We could choose any culture or group of people to write about. I have chosen to write about "Modern Explorers" and broken that down into a few subcultures. One being long distance sailing. I have been given permission to use this forum as a source in some of my research about the culture.

Things I need learn about the sailing culture would be things like, common practices, preparation, gear, things you need like water, power, etc.
What type of people these ocean sailors tend to be...really anything that defines the culture of long distance offshore sailing.

I am a sailor myself and usually don't go offshore (the farthest I have been is 10miles out) and tend to race more regattas around the southeast.

I am trying to find this information to support my paper and would be greatly appreciative if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Jack

Great subject, I am sure there are many long distance voyagers here. I would suggest you also read up on some of the earlier "Modern" voyagers starting with Robert Manry on Tinkerbell , Tania Abby and other singlehanders. Keep us in the loop and good luck with the study.

Lin and Larry Pardey occasionally post on here as well. They would be a terrific source.
