And still you don't know how big was the leak but it was what alledgedly destroyed the batteries..

Its the skippers responsibility to consider all possibilities.. if the engine is the only source of charging I would have wanted either a small gen as back up or.. as on my boats (if not already fitted) a small (50W)solar panel and spare separately stored battery with jump leads.
This way I have an emergency start for the engine or.. if its the engine that's bolloxed I have a source of power for my AP during daylight hours.. hand steer/heave to from sunset to sunrise..
If the owner wants the job done he supplies my requirements or finds another skipper.

That ^ made me laugh. I agree with Phil on the antibiotics overuse, I make a conscientious effort to avoid foods fed antibiotics as a part of their regular diet. I avoid antibiotics like the plague (insert irony emoticon here)

When I am sick at sea, I hurl on the keel bolts.....aaaand we're back on topic.

My systems pretty tough but solo 1000nm from land in a blow. severe stomach cramps and the runs/upchucking is not my favourite past time..
At least you had your privacy in a time of distress!
