How to verify pleasure yacht registration in Malaysia?

Hi,

I will be joining as delivery/volunteer crew on a yacht that's registered in Malaysia. Is there a way to verify the legitimacy of the yacht, such as owner info, transaction date, etc? (Like real estate property search) If so, what's the link to do so? (I can't seem to find it)

Thanks!!

The Langkawi International Yacht Registry is a real entity. It's a part of the Ship Registry Division of the Marine Department of Malaysia [aka Jabatan Laut Malaysia or JLM].

See: https://www.marine.gov.my/jlm/en/abo...stry-division/

The LIYR was established under 2003 legislation in Malaysia, since amended. See: https://lom.agc.gov.my/ilims/upload/...ktap/A1249.pdf

Several private companies act as agents for the Langkawi International Yacht Registry. By which I mean that the agents are happy to take money and documents to register a yacht on the LIYR. I think that none of those agents offer a way to search the LIYR. Agents include a yacht broker with offices on the island of Langkawi in Malaysia and also a boating supply company, Penmarine in the nearby state of Penang [aka Pulau Pinang]. See for example: https://penmarine.com/langkawi-inter...registry-liyr/

I know of no easy way to search the LIYR, by which I mean no website run by the Marine Department of Malaysis. Of course, yachts registered on the LIYR should always be ready and able to show their registration document.

How about, the OP asking for vessel MMSI cert? I think AIS is now mandatory in Malaysia, as it is in most SE Asian countries, so MMSI certification would be required.

I would not get on a yacht without 1) Copy of the yacht documentation 2) Copy of Captain's passport or license 3) Copy of current insurance 4) A past crew reference that I could call
