I did work as a freelance engineer on upwork (online site) for years. There are jobs for writers, software programmers, engineers etc. Pay is low, but it can be done from a boat anywhere there is a internet connection. Money is direct deposited into your checking account. It's possible to make $500-$1000 a month. That's not alot, but it paid my bills, few though they were.

As you may now be guessing, you aren't the first to ask this question. Island Hopper posted a link to one of the several previous discussions on this subject. Basically it boils down to:



- There are no special, secret moneymaking schemes for cruisers.

- When passing through other countries anything you do to earn money locally may be taking income from the locals, require a work permit and if you can manage the above you'll probably be earning at third world pay scale.

- Anything needing internet access needs to be done in civilization because there is no cheap internet off shore.

- Earning money by doing work or providing services to other cruisers can be problematic as helping out fellow cruisers for free is a common thing in the community.



Basically if you have some skills or job that can be done at home then you can probably do it on a boat.

Good summary.
The one other option is that you could have a job that can be done for say 2 months of the year and you go home and work for 2 months and live cheaply otherwise.

After spending 14 years in the marine industry I converted into a coder. Took 2 years for the switch to pay off.

Nope.

Buy undervalued sell overvalued. And collect (rising) income. If lower price reflects diminishing prospect business then asset is correctly valued. So, price itself is not enough to decide over/under valued, although there is whole industry about it that has not made money for anyone, ever, consistently.

I am with Boatman and Stinky Bob.
Wreck your boat, do a bit of internet begging, end up with 10k+ in the bank and a new yacht 36 foot for a $1 all in three weeks. For me that's a lifetime of dreaming and working to get to that stage.
Its hard to beat that, lets see their next trick when the 10k runs out? Maybe sailing around the anchorage with their hand held out? I have never seen floating beggars, so it could be a first?
If you have a work permit for the country you are in then maybe some low paid casual work is possible. When we were back packing we have managed to find bar tending, fruit picking, kitchen hand and boat repair work in Canada, UK, NZ and Australia. Nothing paid much but it kept us traveling.

Hi Doc,

We did a video recently on this exact subject - we've managed pretty well so far and have been earning more than our budget consistently. I'd agree with others though that earning a living from Vlogs / Blogs / Patreon is really difficult - SLV and Delos have been doing it a long time, and are really really good at it. We're really lucky that we get a lot of support for the videos, but even so the cost of the equipment constantly failing in the salt air, dropping go pros overboard etc eats most of what you'd make, unless you're a big youtube star!

Vagabond and Delos really are video production companies that co-incidentally happen to sail. Pretty much like Rick Steves or any of the other successful travel authors, they are really putting out videos on "travel" not on "sailing". And there's nothing wrong with that, but it does take a particular skill set to run a video production company, or a travelogue.
