There is a lot of wisdom in all of the responses. My wife and I looked at cats for 10+ yrs until we could afford one and always had call backs, but the best
advice we were given was from a
broker who said, " sit in the
head. If is feels comfortable, then sit everywhere else and take notes". You will generate some curiosity but you will also know how the spaces flow and feel to you- very important. Multiple visits are advised and rainy days are best. We always checked for test
sails after the show: some had to be pre-arranged, but if you asked enough pointed questions about
maintenance, where the best places are to store things, when to reef, how to trim
sails at various
wind speeds, and especially, how long of a wait from ordering to build completion, you will get their attention and might get that invite to a test sail ( if any still offer this, as they used to in Annapolis), to experience it all for yourself. Don't be surprised if you are told to try a
charter ( highly recommended). Also ask about the need for a
delivery crew and if you can contact the
boat owners web site for their feedback. Above all, don't rush into a sale- enjoy the process. If there are
delivery crew at the show, they are great sources of first hand knowledge if you get them talking about the trip. Good hunting.
