Boat: Junk rigged composite Atkin Tern, 30 feet
Posts: 23
Re: How old is your boat?

My boat was launched in 1975, built to a William Atkin Tern design (which appeared in Motor Boat and Yachting in 1932). Strip planked cedar, fiberglassed inside and out. Re-rigged from the original gaff sail plan to modern junk rig in 2002 by previous owner. No standing rigging to worry about, but this is compensated for by a bewildering plethora of running rigging. Otherwise, much simpler than our old voyaging boat: no on deck varnish and all Brightside paint, aluminum mast, tiller, minimal electrical, rebuilt 3 cylinder Yanmar. Previous owner took really good care of her--hope I can do as well!

35 years and counting.....

1985 S2 9.2, so 35 years old; purchased by me in May, 2018.

The previous owner rescued it from a bankrupt boatyard/marina, 3 weeks before crushing was to begin. The project boat was moved by motor to her work boatyard. The previous owner personally sanded & painted the bottom & mast, installed new head & hoses, marina AC/Heat, installed used electronics.

Original engine from what I see. I'm making some interior improvements.

I race her as time permits.

Perhaps the car comparison makes more sense for purely racing types of boats. I bet if this was the Racers Forum we'd see a much different age spread.
You are probably right. Racing yachts are a whole different animal, so I bet the age spread would be very different.

Re: How old is your boat?

1984 C&C 37. Originally set up and equipped for serious racing. After number of years (10+) sat on hard for 2 years due to estate problems. Bought by cruising family, who had rigging and hull checked and refurbished by original builders. Cruising items added (A/C, hot & cold pressure washer, cockpit table, bimini etc). Cruised several years with great maintenance and and more cruising additions, excellently maintained, then on hard 2 years as owner purchased newer, larger boat. I have had the boat for 4 years, an excellent, top condition and fast cruising and casual sailing boat. Fresh water Great lakes boat. Equipped with cruising sails. The older racing sails that came with it, unused for many years, still look fairly good, but I'm past that after many years, and but still race a bit on friends boat. Plan to KiwiKrip deck next year.

1973 Dufour Safari 27 Tiller
1976 Dufour 27

The '76 has been pretty much renewed and is in very good shape.
The '73 with the tiller was the "free" boat, and will end up costing me more than the other two! I am redoing most things on that one but it is no where near done yet.

Yes, I would indeed drive a 40 year old car and up until recently when I sold all 5 off, my cars were quite old for cars.
64 Alpha Romeo Spider (just for racing)
65 VW Beetle
70 VW Micro Bus Almost a daily driver
73 VW Super Beetle (Daily Driver)
86 VW Jetta GLI (Daily Driver)

Yes, I know I need help. They say the first step in fixing a problem is admitting it. I have done that but I never seem to get to the second step, whatever that is. Come to think of it, I don't want to know!

Re: How old is your boat?

41 years last April, and we've been living and sailing on it for 34 years.

Our 34th racing season starts (hopefully) Dec 2. Boat has never been better.
