There are
boat owner and
boat owners. There are ones that don't give a dam and only do stuff when it breaks, there are others that don't mind how it looks but keep it functional spot on, then there are people like me who are slightly OCD about the looks but obsessive about the operational condition and the then there are the fastidious clinically OCD sought who are out polishing and waxing after the slightest drizzle (these peeps should really seek therapy). These types of people apply to all owners of things and what you need to do is look for those who are higher up the scale. There's a guy a couple of boat down from me who has a Moody 36 nearly 40 years old and it looks like it has just left the factory. Typical signs are things like
winch and
hatch covers, hauling out every year for the
winter and shrink wrapped, bilges you could happily eat your dinner off, all bright
work gleaming as if it had just been fitted, loads of
history and
maintenance invoices all neatly filed, owners manual in pristine condition wrapped in cling film, all
maintenance such as sail drive diaphragms, standing
rigging,
sails etc etc dutifully replaced based on the age and not the condition and this is the boat you want to buy. There are a few out there! Look for the tell tel signs and you won't go wrong. This is the type of guy when caught in the pub with your are inwardly screaming run away but if you buy a boat from him you will have the best deal going.
Happy hunting
