So that puts you and Lasivian in the same category: great minds = great ideas

Good luck with that

That’s the number I received for the same question on an older Hallberg Rassy. There is a company in Europe that rebuilds engines and ships all over the world. One of my yacht club mates had the yard put the new engine in and he did all the connecting and fine tuning of the motor mounts himself. I can ask how much $$, if you are interested.

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

I put a new 50 HP Beta and transmission in my boat last year. I did the install andall the work at the pier. It cost me $17000. I then had to change the propeller, another $1160 since I don't dive, I had it installed. The whole episode took me four days.

You forgot the oil dipstick - if the water was deeper than that, the engine is toast……along with any electrics (starter, solenoid), possibly the alternator.

Might be okay, might not.

$30k for a professional engine replacement is about right.

That is what I did, in England in 2003. About the same amount of time but back then it only cost $6,000. I reused the old transmission which lasted another six years before replacing. That included custom mounting brackets and other customizations. 19 years and 4500 engine hours still happy with the choice.

Beta was a much smaller company back then. I worked with the managing director and got a substantial discount.

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

That's good to know! Beta does seem to be a growing concern. Just in the couple years I've been checking, they've grown from one to 4-5 dealers in the NW of the US. Not to mention Kubota dealers. Much different journey than Sole, which I repowered a boat about twenty years ago.

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

My boat had a 58 hp and I replaced it with a 60 hp engine and new transmission last year. Did all the work myself and it was 21k total. A friend with the same type of sailboat replaced his and had a boatyard do all the work, he payed 65k. Another friend had a yard do it on another type of sailboat and it was 90k for a 70 hp engine and transmission replacement. Some of the prices mentioned earlier seem very low, the price goes up fast if you are paying a yard by the hour, per person.

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

Depending on your skill set you could always find a new never used motor and then pay to get it installed. I found a brand new Yanmar 20hp 2GMF for $3000 and installed it in our yacht. Right now there is a new 40hp Nanni on Facebook Australia for $5000. This is not a rare occasion, I know and have helped a number of clients find new/old diesels at the right price.

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

Have the engine running and a sea trail prior to purchasing - then worry about the cost if it can’t perform.
and if the engine is in water what happened to the rest of the boat?
