How long have you owned your boat?

April started year number fourteen on this boat, eclipsing my previous record of thirteen years. Rebuilt her from scratch and still working on it. I have been happily living aboard since 1996. This is the last one unless I do something stupid and lose her. I lost too many years of good sailing for a bit bigger boat, " ain't doin that again"[emoji20]

Bill & I bought a bare hull in 1975--pretty much lived on her as she was built--moved permanently aboard 1984 even though still not fully rigged. I'm still living aboard and just as satisfied with boat life as the first day we began. Bill would be too if he hadn't passed on eight years ago.

Kind of a surprise the pool results. In Europe most sailors change boats generally between 5 and 10 years but having this a forum a predominance of US sailors I thought that the results regarding the ones that change boat each 10 years was rather low but no:

50.6% change boat before 10 years and even more surprisingly 24.1% each 5 years. Who would say?

You cannot conclude that from the results of this survey. Not enough information.

What you can conclude is that about half of people who responded, have had their present boats for less than 15 years SO FAR. A very different proposition.

Most people who own a boat in th US don't use their boat the same you and I do in the Med. The vast majority in the US rarely if ever leave the marina or travel more than 20 miles from the marina. The boats are used for weekend mostly dockside entertainment, a different purpose.

The needs for someone who routinely travels 1,500-3000 miles per season, are going to be quite different than someone who just occasionally leaves the dock just to go to a maina pump out station.

We're planning to celebrate our 20th anniversary sometime this summer. We bought our boat in a partnership that has held up well, dividing costs and abilities between two couples in a boat that has held up and performed well for decades. We are quite pleased. Heading to Maine this summer after some local day races to keep us tuned up.

I've had my girl for 4.5 years. The two ex-husbands don't hold a candle to her when it comes to trustworthyness and reliability. We also go out just about every weekend
