Re: How Do We Keep Our Old Bodys Working?

Having had the same boat for 26 years it’s easy to benchmark my physical condition.

Hauling the anchor is no longer hand over hand. Now it’s heave, grab, heave.

That said, this summer I tried, and succeeded, at something I’d not tried in 20 years- I boarded the boat from the water by grabbing the gunwhale then the bowsprit and pulling myself up and out.

The big change I’ve noticed is the summer muscle no longer survives the lethargy of winter, it now fades like tans and calluses. We are very active in winter hiking, skiing, and ice boating but most of that is lower body and endurance. When I was a kid my dad made me split wood. Heat now comes at the flick of a switch and the snow shovel is replaced by the HOA.

And I despise gyms as much as shopping malls.

That's one hell of a workout to play (and sing) like that for a few hours.

Thomm225, That's one of my all time favorite songs (album even) and I too like the 2012 version. I'd put it into heavy rotation for my BBQ music but I can't find the MP3 to download (I'd buy it!). Amazon is my usual source but they don't seem to have it.

Nice. I know the song from this movie which is really good ......then I finally stumbled upon the real singer after watching an old Talking heads video. Speaking of aerobics. 1983 .

Many of the "stars" were actually living in the old folks home featured in the movie and they loved doing it

Re: How Do We Keep Our Old Bodys Working?

A person absolutely should get a blood panel and physical check up every year or even six months. Plus, if having a problem of of any kind, get to a medical professional, sometimes like a sports doctor / physical therapist / or a specialist .

Also, do our best to figure out what caused the particular situation. And correct that problem as well.

Could be one thing or a combination of many :

Wrong exercises for our body, doing exercises without proper form, maybe a bad bed, or improper posture, or sitting at a computer or anywhere too long. Not stretching can also cause horrible back pain. And that is a fact.

I get stiff after sitting watching a couple of NFL games, or improper posture doing most anything. Sitting at this bloody computer too long is not good. Need to get up and move.

Also, those blood panels and physicals are important to get taken care of on a regular basis.

Being a U.S.A Vietnam Vet, I go to the VA for what ever medical situation might arise, along with my regular blood panels and check ups.

It was at one of my physicals , after the blood panels, and my VA doc, found a quickly beating heart. This was when we lived on Kauai island with just a small VA clinic.
The doc sent me over to Wilcox hospital for a stress test. The doc got the results and called me in. She had me on the next hawaiian air flight and over to Tripler Army Hospital on Oahu.

Then came the angio gram, and the next day, christmas eve, I had a triple bypass...two arteries 90 % glogged and one other 50 % ,

Point being, that regular check up and the quick action by the VA, and me following orders saved my live. This chirstmas eve will be my 10th anniversary of all that.
Still going strong.

Plan is to : continue working out following the programs that I outlined. Do my stretches daily, Watch my posture, eat smart, and stay active with hiking and long walks. No running, the knees are pretty well shot, but we hike 5 plus miles, and then go to happy hour for grub and grog for our reward.

That is weekly, as are also doing a couple of two mile walk/hkes here at home in Dana Point. Not flat bridal trails, but ups , downs and level as well, along the beach and inland. The 5 milers are a few minutes drive to our several wilderness trails.

Point being, there is more to heath and fitness than just resistance training...

It takes those blood panels, check ups, eating smart, proper form when training, flexibility , and cardio, good posture, and not beating the hell out of ourselves with heaving the iron around to impress our personal desire records. Stay smart.

Another secret is to have a great mate in Erica, who is also a pilot and sailor, and scuba diver, and hiker, and kayaker and works out 5 times a week, and we do a lot of active living together. 36 years now. And she is vibrant, and looking great, with that positive and friendly attitude all the time.

Going thru a life of amazing adventures, I was also an American Council on Exercise personal trainer . But that was a sideline, main careers were as a professional pilot including the last 17 years ( 2500 missions ) as an instructor pilot for Air Combat U.S.A flying 5 and 6 G dogfights. Point being , at

At six g's the body weighs SIX TIMES its normal weight , figure those forces on a back. Also career # 2, concurrently with flying , I was a USCG Lic Captain, on sailing and motor vessels for about 35 years. And my wee Irish mom, wanted me to be Mr.
business man, confined to a cubical. We need to live our own lives.

Not beating on the chest, but trying to get over the point of putting all aspects of a full and active life, exercising and getting those annual or sooner check ups, and see a professional when our physical well being goes whacko.

We know that each of us is very different, and we are responsible to do everything we can to keep on keeping on. the OP is very strong and dedicated, and just needs to clear up that problem, but a professional diagnosis might be a very good idea.

Life is an adventure, and living it to the best of our abilities is a good plan. That means taking care of ourselves as well as living our dreams.

The OP was serious about his health, exercising and cruising, the above is all factual and true and the best advice that I can come up with. Others have additional suggestions.....consider them all.

Next may, I will be 80 years of age and do not live, act, talk or feel like it.....I would like for the whole planet to be positive,, healthy, strong and active for as long as possible.

Live those dreams .
