Trying check if muffler needs fixing or replacing.

Have read on CF where mufflers have failed and nearly sunk boats or destroyed engines.

What makes you suspect a problem ? It's pretty simple, if it does not leak and exhaust is coming out the other end it's ok.

How clean check muffler ?

If it's just sitting there that isn't optimum though, eventually it may vibrate and chafe through, if it's mounted then it ought to last until something damages it, like the water in it freezes during Winter or something.
Engines are often damaged from a muffler overfilling with water and water getting into the engine, but that is not a fault of the muffler, it's from usually either over cranking an engine that doesn't start, or possibly water being forced into the exhaust from outside of the boat.
But that is not a muffler fault

Re: How clean check muffler ?

I do see a problem you may want to address with the muffler.
The exhaust hoses only have one hose clamp on them . I would recommend adding an additional good quality SS hose clamp to both sides .

Check for abrasion against the fiberglass and double clamp the hoses.

Re: How clean check muffler ?

Clean out the exhaust elbow first as it isn't clear in the photo whether that is free or not. Then attend to the muffler which may well be blameless....

Re: How clean check muffler ?

All good advice by other posters.
Perhaps google & read up on these topics:

1. marine anti siphon loop or vented loop.
2.water lock in marine engine
3.marine exhaust mixing elbow

There is lots of info on the internet & Youtube on these & other topics to help you, along with the folks on this forum

Here is one link that may explain how water can get in your engine from exhaust : Vented Loops - MyBoatsGear.com

Cheers/ Len
