Re: Honolulu to Panama

If you are not going cruising then I suggest you ship the boat to the east coast. Is that $30 k on a yacht transport or container ship. You may be able to get better rates on a cargo ship, but you will have to lower the mast and radar pole if you have one.

Re: Honolulu to Panama

The 30K was a cargo ship, yes would still have to build a cradle, drop mast and all of that. It was also only to Oakland CA. Ken

We shipped a 42 ft boat from Auckland to San Francisco. The 'shipping' cost was $13,000, but the total was $25,000. Beware the longshoreman's union.

It was years ago, and can't remember the name. We were able to use a 40' flat rack on a container ship (there's room for the overhang between the stacks of containers), and saved quite a bit. If you go Hawaii to a US port, you may be stuck with American Flag vessels$$, but you might get a good rate to Panama.

My main point was that you have to be on top of things to avoid huge extra charges. I got charged for 8 man DAYS of longshoremen to drop the boat in the water in SFO, and my Kiwi friends remember getting screwed in Honolulu when they shipped in boats for the Kenwood Cup.

I'd start by searching for 'flat rack shipping for boats' and calling a few people, or talk to your local yacht brokers.

Don, thanks, I actually only found one company and it was over the top and there would still be extra's, so he's just goining to have to wait or have some one else sail her over, after seeing the survey it needs some major work anyway. I see your on the loop, where abouts? I have done about 2/3rds of it. Ken
