Home designed, home built insurance

A number of you are out there sailing without insurance coverage. I’d like to pick your minds. I am considering building a boat of my own design, I have experience in this and it is not the subject. As I call around I have had little success in finding anyone who will insure such a boat, even with a favorable survey. All I am looking for anyway is liability so that I can occasionally go in a marina for a stay or dry dock at a yard. What do you folks do ? Anchor a lot I am sure. Private docks ? Storage ? Thanks.

There are many thousands of "home-built" boats at sea covered by every kind and level of insurance.

Just takes more digging and persistence.

And maybe an actual boat all surveyed and ready to go at hand.

Document each stage with photos, get professionals involved at the critical ones, keep all receipts. . .


Edit: yes the self-designed may be a high hoop, could you get a qualified NA to sign off on the plans?

Yes, I might find a NA to do that, but I must admit this kind of hoop jumping makes me weary. Thanks for the reply.

Having built my own boat I've met many others who have done the same. None has had any difficulties in obtaining insurance.

A couple of these also designed their boats, again, no problem with insurance.

I've had insurance through Nautilus, QBE and now Topsail.

Others I know have used Elders, Nautilus, QBE, Topsail, Pantaenius and Club Marine.

Designed and built my own 36' schooner. Had it surveyed by Llloyd's and professional photos. Had no problem insuring it through Boat US.

Find someone with a home built that had insurance and see who their carrier is.

I believe all the marinas care about is liability insurance, I should think you would find an underwriter for that. They may be more concerned with your credentials than the boats.

Does the boat have a design? IF so call it a "name of designer" 41. Title it as such. You dont have to say and no one will ask how it was built. Been there, done that. A couple times actually.

Mine is through Intact, a common Canadian carrier. Boat designed in 1930, modified by me , hull moulded professionally, everything else done by me and a retired professional boatbuilder. Surveyor was quite complimentary, never had a problem

I designed and built my boat and have liability insurance through Progressive, it was easy to get and quite reasonable.
