Hiring a captain to move my boat - where to begin?

Hello! Next season, I'll be moving my boat (Catalina 34, tall rig) from Worton Creek on the Chesapeake Bay to a marina on the north shore of Long Island. Trucking it there is prohibitively expensive. The better option would be to hire a captain. My plan is to sail up the Jersey shore, through NY harbor, up the East River (yes, I know about Hells Gate), and into Long Island Sound.

Where to begin? I'm "unconsciously incompetent" (I don't know what I don't know) on this topic.

I'd appreciate some guidance as to the questions I need to ask and the questions I'll be asked.
