Help Need replace morse control for kubota diesel

I have a kubota beta 14 and the morse single lever control is not working correctly.

When I move the control level forward the transmission does not engage unless I move suddenly and then it goes into full gear. I cannot get it to low speed.

I would appreciate any help in checking the morse control assembly or in a supplier to buy a new cable.

Thanks to all

jim

Re: Help Need replace morse control for kubota diesel

Hmm... no takers yet

Welcome aboard xxhat, hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will pipe up soon.

In the meantime I suggest the following. Presumably your single lever control lever has two morse cables attached to it. One for the gear shift and the other for the throttle. It would appear from your description the shift cable is stiff or maladjusted. Has it ever worked correctly or when did it last work properly?

I would probably disconnect the throttle cable and observe why the shift cable is not working correctly. Normally the shift cable should do it's job before the throttle cable begins to move.

Some pictures would be helpful.

I hope this helps.

Re: Help Need replace morse control for kubota diesel

Ours (an older style) has a slot where the cable gets attached to the Morse control. During installation you slide the cable up/down that slot to get the proper throw at the other end then lock it down. If/when the nut gets loose the cable connection can slide down to the shortest throw end of the control, which then means you only get enough throw when you for high speed.

It may be a pain, but if you can pull the control out of the mount you can see this pretty easily. Alternately, if you can reach it, you can disconnect the shift cable and try to operate it by hand. If the cable operates readily by hand then the problem is in the Morse lever (probably the connection between the cable and the lever), if you can't operate the cable without the lever then it may be stuck/rusted/kinked somewhere.

Re: Help Need replace morse control for kubota diesel

Thanks.

The morse lever controls the throttle and shift cables. The boat is not near me so I cannot post photos.

I did disconnect the shift cable and it seemed to work by hand.

It is really hard to get access to the cable connecting to the transmission.

Access is upside down and I cannot really see the connection to the transmission.

Hoping for a video or detailed description with photos.

Thanks a lot to those who replied !!!!!

Okay, I understand the difficulties of access

Just remember that at some stage, someone installed it and with enough work, you will be able to get as much access as the original installer had.

Dangar Marine's youtube channel has a video on disassembling and adjusting the throttle/shift quadrant for an outboard. I don't believe the Morse ones are materially different. You may find the video helpful in understanding common failures and ways to address them.

Make sure that both ends of the Morse cable are properly retained to the bracket, if they are loose etc it can cause problems. There is s a little slot in the cable end that is clamped tight by a little retainer.
If that's not it, is the control clean and lubed? There's some sliding mechanisms there that must be free to move.

My SWAG is there is nothing wrong with your cable other than adjustment at one end or the other.

I for one do not understand your question or the symptoms you mention. It’s a kind of “ apples and oranges “ thing. Your transmisiion is controlled by one cable, speed is controlled by another. ??

The "single lever control" shifts the transmission in gear first, then continues to more rpm the further you push the lever. For reverse you just go the opposite direction after passing neutral. Is that what you mean?

Re: Help Need replace morse control for kubota diesel

Have you done any servicing of the unit and cables? I had a problem last year that sounds similar to your complaint ... I took and applied some lithium grease to the mechanism; I then trickled some graphite powder into the cable jackets ... do not use oil for the cables - End of problem ... so it was either one or the other that caused the problem for me. Can't say which, because I lubed both at the same time.

Do you own, or have access to the manual for a Single Lever Control unit? ... If not, try googling it on-line. Failing that, I have one I would be willing to photo copy and send to you for the copying and mail costs alone.

PM me if you want it.

For visualizing hard-to-reach places you can get some light down there and then reach down with your cell phone camera and take pictures.

Re: Help Need replace morse control for kubota diesel

Sounds like the mechanism holding the shift cable housing to the shift bracket on the control has come loose or detached. Depending on the model of the control, it is usually held on with a strap and two machine screws, or there's a groove in the cable housing that clips into a slot on the shift cable bracket. Check there for starters...

or

conversely, there could be a clamp on the transmission just like the one directly above that's loosened, or one like this that can come unclasped...

Yes.. installed by a double jointed midget.... yacht construction companies employ most of the world's midgets and they install most of the 'interesting' bits...

How do I know this? ....

On ours you simply can't access the installed cables, midget or no. But there is enough slack in the cables to remove the unit from its mount, pull it up, do the work. Then of course you have to caulk and remount, but that's boating for you.
